ear piercing-safe or not?

hey everyone i'm thinking of getting the upper part of my ear pierced and almost everyone seems to be discouraging me.Some of my other friends who got it done scare me everytime telling me how much it hurts and how they couldn't sleep for whole nights due to the pain  :frown: Also i was reading some stuff online about how you can develop serious infections in your cartilage :frown:
So i just wanted to ask people here who have done it how bad is it really?
Also i know this has been asked before but does it matter which ear you get it done i was thinking of doing my left one

I had it done years ago (though I have let it heal over now) and I didn't have any problems with it, though the chances of you developing a problem is more likely than if you had your earlobe pierced. Yes, it does hurt more than for a bit, but the pain is not really that much big a deal, as long as you don't sleep on that side for a bit then you won't feel it. Maybe I have a high pain threshold but for me that pain was not that bad. Personally I think that toothache is a hundred times worse!

I know a girl that peirced it herself and it was fine.. But thats not saying peirce it yourself!

If you're going to get it done professionally make sure you buy the correct cleaning stuff, and look after it

make sure u get it done with a needle because if u get it done with a gun, it can shatter the cartilage. i think its a pretty safe piercing

i got mine done with a gun and its fine! if its the inner bit of your ear they use a needle but most won't fr the upper outer rim bit. just keep it clean and let it heal and it'll be fine
I've got my lower ear pierced with a stud ring. Never felt any pain and nor has it caused problems for the few years it's been in there.

Yeh, but you have to remember there can be complications with anything! These gross pictures probably demonstrate something that doesn't often happen, for example finding a chickens head in your big mac - it happens, but not often!

I had my top ear done last year, and it was the most painless piercing ive ever had done (when its actually pierced) it doesn't hurt at all! and i have a realllly low pain threshold, trust me on this!

I wasnt able to sleep on that ear for proably a week, but like someone said above, it really is no big deal. A few months ago i changed the gold stud to a metal plated ring (something cheap from claires) and it got reallly sore, so make sure you like the one you got it pierced with for a year, or if you do wanna change it, put in a decent earring.

I love piercings and recommend it! People can blow anything out of proportion, but yeh, always clean it twice a day and you'll be fine!  Sorry to ramble so much, but hope ive cleared most things up

I meant chickens head in your mcchicken sandwich... cos everyone knows big macs are from cows not chickens... whoops
i have a bar in my top ear, maily cos the butterfly back on the one it was pirced with kept getting caught, and i didn't want to wear a ring in it.

Wow, I'm impressed! Keep up the good work guys!

But don't go to the pharmacy, go to a proper piercing studio. If you're unsure, look up a good one here. Pharmacies will use a gun, and will not be the best place to get your cartilege pierced.

Make sure you clean it properly. You should use a sloution of 1 tsp salt to 1 pint boiled water at least twice a day at first unless your piercing studio advises you differently.

And make sure you don't drink alcohol at least 24 hours before and after the piercing, as it can increase the bleeding.

cool you guys started talking about this now... I'm prob getting the same piercing done this weekend.

Just curious about the stuff you said you ahve to clean it with?? do the piercers have stuff in the studio they try to sell to you on top of the £20 or whatever piercing price??

And the thing about alcohol...? do the holes really bleed that much after an hour or so anyway??

A good studio will not try to sell you anything. They will tell you what they have, but then leave the decision up to you. The salt water recipe above is recommended by most piercing places, and is actually preferable on new piercings to most things that you can buy anyway.

If you're gonna get a piercing done you should really do it sensibly. If you feel you can't go without alcohol for 48 hours then please see your doctor or phone Alcoholics Anonymous. If you have some major event (eg party) then just postpone the piercing. If it's after it you probably won't feel in much of a party mood, and I'm sure that getting pierced with a hangover is not fun either.

i got scaffolding in my left ear, it was fine at first but then the skin started to grow over the bar, so the other week i had to have it taken out, the bottom hole was fine but i had to have the top hole re-pierced, now they have taken out the big bar joining the holes and i got 2 little bars then i'm gonna get a metal bar in a few weeks. the first time i had it pierced it hurt so much, and i couldnt sleep on it for ages. when i got the top hole re-done it diddnt hurt that much at all. deffo get it done with a needle. anyway the moral of the story is: never go to bodycraft in nottingham!

Make sure you get it done at a place you know
I never had problems with mine until i *cough* missed when i tried to put it back in and repierced my ear. In which case it was obviously not sterile and went a bit urgh
It doesn't hurt anything like as badly as people claim. It hurt far less than having my lobes done. It just gets very VERY hot
Make sure you have yours done on the opposite side to the one you sleep on! I and a friend got ours done at the same time, and i tried to tell her to have it done left not right ( i just think it looks better) and she INSISTED that she'd thought about it... which is naturally why she sleeps on her right side - idiot
I had mine done last tuesday and it is absolutely fine. i had it done with a gun but my bro had it with a needle. neither hurt and as long as you keep it clean like any other piercing it should be fine. I have to keep it in for at least 12 weeks though which is a bit annoying as i thought it would be ok to change in 6. Afterwards it hurts a bit to sllep on but now it is absolutely fine. Dont let ppl scare you into not having it because it really isnt that bad, and i thought it was better than having my lobes done.

Just thought i'd bring up this thread again seeing as its after the weekend. how many people got theirs done? I did on saturday morning. Didn't really hurt (apart from the wind blowing in it while i cycled home...but that was more uncomfortable than painful)

As this is the first piercing ive ever had done, im just curious about the healing process. there is a bit of a scab formed on the back/top of my ear and i was wondering where people saying 'clean the piercing' do they mean i should just wash the scab or wash/pick it off...? and how much should i be moving it around? and should i be moving it 'through' the piercing or just wiggling it up and down? i have a ring through the helix by the way.
Reply 18
Do not pick the scab. Wash it with your warm salt water solution. It's best to soak it for about 5 mins each day, but ears aren't the easiest of things to soak. Depending on your positioning of your helix you might be able to soak it by lying on your side with a dish of salt water there.

Only move it when it is very clean. You don't want any of the crusties going inside the hole, as they may tear it or irritate it. Move the ring through the piercing, but not much. And never force it if it doesn't want to go!
