Depends on the human resource manager whether they follow up references or not. I applied for a job at safeway and they didn't follow up my references.
As for the work you'll be asked to do. It depends on what they need. If they need someone to stack shelves, they'll give you that job but if they need staff on tills, they'll give you a job on the tills.

Yeah, they should give you training. I know the till staff at my store have a session where they are trained on a till in the staff area before going on the shop floor.
I work on the deli but I've been trying to get a transfer to the tills for the past couple of months. I'd say the deli isn't a bad place to work but after a while the cleaning gets tiresome. Most people I work with say tills are boring but personally I'd rather do that!

The delicatessen, we sell specialist cheeses, meats, salamis etc. Its so customers can buy the quantity they want rather than buying pre-packed where the amount is standard. On our deli, we also sell curries, pies/quiches and hot chickens.
We have to wear different uniforms to other staff as we are actually handling the food - usually whites (basically chef jackets), aprons and some form of hat.

i work at tesco, im a checkout dolly bird, its dead easy, i dont think they bothered with my references they just asked some god damn awful questions like
"can you give me a for instance when you have felt disappointed?"
"can you give me an example of when you have had to help someone in need?"

be prepared for those questions as its really hard to find an answer

I worked at tesco for 4 years

Started off on the shop floor for a couple of months, got bored of that so moved to checkouts. Checkouts got boring after about a year so moved to the customer service desk. Discovered I wasn't too keen on customers so got promoted - enjoyed telling people what to do and the payrise, but had to quit during first year medicine as i couldn't balance the two.

omg same here. i got all my gcse's and ive got a levels. yet i still get regected by TESCO! of all places! ive had plenty of jobs before

but i think they regected me because i have a disability....and also i was only applying for shelf stacking, yet they made me do the damn bag packing test!

which is completly stupid because im parcially deaf and i wonted a shelf stacking job with no customer communication.

    i hate tesco!!! grrrrrrrrrr

back packing isnt exactly hard though is it? and you have just as much customer communication as a shelf stacker as you do anywhere else

well it is hard when ur deaf and you cant hear the person answer when you ask them 'doya want ya bags packed??'!!!!!!!

seriously, i told them i was deaf and that communication could only be with the staff who knew i was deaf. and thats all shelf stacking involves. (cuz ive done it before somewhere else!)

I sent off an application for Tescos too. On the front it said 'position applied for' - I wasn't sure (as I wanted ANY work) so I just wrote 'General assistant', would this be ok?
bah I've had no previous paid employment, so I probably won't get it anyway.

I got rejected by Safeway once for reasons unknown but then about a year later I decided to start work again (to pay for exams etc) and I got in easily at Tesco. And yes there are some right muppets who work there, including many of the managers too.
