I think it depends what kind of mood you're in. A song that you normally hate might have some significance at a certain point in your life. And vice versa. Sometimes I think 'this song is beautiful' and other times I just have to turn it off.

I like Candle in the Wind by Elton John. It's a peaceful-ish song.

Mr. Brightside is obviously awesome. GO KILLERS! But I don't consider it...beautiful. It probably could be if it didnt repeat the lyrics and had more to it...

The Orbital song stands out there (I'm a bit of a fan of Orbital). I agree that that's a beautiful song. Have you ever seen the video that looks a bit like an american commercial from the 60s? Crazy stuff! Suddenly a baby appears in the sink.

What exactly does "beautiful" though? Emotional? Melancholic? Cute? Romantic?

What I consider truly beautiful is anything by Sigur Ros (good to see I'm not the first to suggest them) and the Album Leaf.
    Favourites would be:
The 3rd track off Sigur Ros' EP Sigur 1/Sigur 9
and Over The Pond by The Album Leaf. I just love the high-pitched squeeky singing

If it's for beautiful, as in melancholic, music:
    Tom Waits - Waltzing Matilda
    Rufus Wainwright - Natasha
    Shelby Starner - You
Three Colours Red - Beautiful Day
    Bic Runga - Sway
    Nick Drake - Northern Sky
    Loundon Wainwright III - Homeless
Tom McRae - Draw Down The Stars
Trespassers William - Vapour Trail (cover of Ride's original version)
Stereophonics - Just Looking (I think it's great anyway)
    Fleetwood Mac - Landslide
Eva Cassidy - Fields Of Gold
    Kathryn Williams - Jasmine Hoop
Emiliana Torrini - Today Has Been Ok
    Jewel - Hands
    Lowgold - Mercury
Nada Surf - Inside Of Love
    Iron & Wine - Jezebel
Ed Harcourt - This One's For You
Pedro The Lion - The Longer I Lay Here / Lullaby
Art Of Fighting - Come Round & Show Me
Joseph Arthur - In The Sun / Honey & The Moon
    Ben Folds Five - Evaporated
Ben Harper - Another Lonely Day
Counting Crows - Round Here / Anna Begins / Colorblind / Amy Hit The Atmosphere
    Elbow - Powder Blue
    Heather Nova - Paper Cup
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - Somewhere Over The Rainbow (not intentionally melancholic but that's how I see it)
Marc Cohn - Healing Hands (ER Soundtrack  )
    Mark Kozelek - Ruth Marie
Pearl Jam - Off He Goes
    This Way - Crawl
Sundays / Rolling Stones - Wild Horses

Any of those songs can make a grown man cry.
