I know what the guy is getting at though. We're not saying Premier League fans aren't proper supporters, of course they are. But there is a certain experience to lower league football. Not a better one, just a different one. And of course I would want my team to get to the Premiership, but I do think things would change a bit. The great thing about supporting a small club is that you know you make a difference, you feel a lot more part of the club. There is a greater intimacy.

Agreed. Although lower league clubs is a bit vague. Can't see much difference in supporting West Brom than Reading (assume last season isn't over).

By calling someone an idiot does not necessarliy make their point true, come up with whatever statistics you like from MY point of view he was not all that in the tournament, give me Gattuso anyday. For me he seems to flitter in and out of games and never takes a game by the scruff of the neck, he is a good passion but i feel that he lacks the passion and the drive that i require for someone to be a great player, its just as I see it , you obviously see it differently but thats your opinion.
Gattuso is in my team. Pirlo is not the same type of player but to say he had ashocking tournament becaue of this is pure lunacy. He was by far one of the best players in the tournament, not just in the latter stages but throughout. In terms of passion and drive, would you say that Kaka or Messi show more of it? I think not, but it doesnt mean they had shocking tournaments. By the way i thought Kaka was Brazil's best midfielder, but not a patch on Pirlo in this tournament.

I think Ze Roberto would have a shout on Brazil's best midfielder.

Maldini is *the* defender of his generation. I don't think Roberto Carlos is hugely over rated but would struggle in a team where he has to show much greater defensive discipline and duty.

    Defending the roberto carlos way ;

Once you've all finished your Paulo Maldini throb-fest, smoked a cigarette and returned to reality, there may be a point in debating this. Roberto Carlos, overrated? Ha! Do you think an overrated player would have commanded a position in Real Madrid for so long, with such a glittered career, given their incredible spending power? I think not. Carlos is not only a tough tackling full back, but an incredible force going forward. I've also heard he's not too bad at kicking the ball.

Like I said, I'd have Roberto Carlos in my team over Paulo Maldini.
Well Maldini has been in the milan starting 11 since the late 80's, so theres no point about going about how Carlos has held his place in the Real Madrid team for a mere 10 years. Roberto Carlos has always been a weak link defensively.

So? He had a bad World Cup? Where exactly was Ronaldinho? Is he now considered a crap midfielder for being shown up by Zidane in the quarter final?
Did i ever say Roberto Carlos was crap because he had a bad world cup? i was just pointing that his defensive game has a lot to be desired.

I think forward thinking moderators should re arrange the football section completely into sub sections. so that when you click the link to football you are presented with further catagories i.e:

    - Club threads
    - General football chat
    - World cup (when it was on)
    - players

    etc etc

Is Davis really that good though and for nearly £3m! Don't really remember him much when playing for Preston against us last season.
Can't see anymore half decent signings now to be honest but hope I'm proved wrong of course.

Man United were regularly getting some of the highest crowds in england when they were in the 2nd division. Newcastle's gates about 15 years ago were nothing to shout about.
And.. have you ever been to Old Trafford now. It's sooooo quiet. They say thay have more fans, but where is the atmosphere??? It's a joke. We sing an sing loud. No-1 else can. FACt.. best football stadium atmosphere ever.. and you know it!

It's the Sky money that has brought all this about. Back in the day, a team that one division 2 would have a good chance at winning div 1 (the prem) the following year. EVerything was more competitive, and there were much bigger gates than you see today at most grounds.
