The sun started a hatemail campaign against him encouraging people to bombard him with abuse, and you're surprised he made a few comments about the English?

Urs Meier was a top referee.

Even if he was rubbish, unless you are saying he purposely didnt do his job properly just to spite the english, he didnt deserve getting any abuse, let alone the disgraceful reaction the Sun solicited.

Sending hatemail isnt living up to the English stereotype of being chivalrous....

or perhaps it's living up to the English stereotype of being a football hooligan!

Yes but I don't expect much from some football fans anyway. I get the impression that racism is something knew in Spain because of Eto'o but then Hiddink ordered a racist banner to be removed during his time at Valencia. People have short memories.

Urs Meier showed himself to be nothing short of a crap referee during and after the game. The Sun then aided the campaign, (not that I realized personally). Urs made comments before the emails and abuse.

Your football knowledge at the time must be tainted. How on earth did you know he was a top ref by the way? That's a rather interesting comment.

Like I previously stated, 'Anders Frisk' was a decent referee that didn't deserve the abuse regardless of the truth. Urs did.

So he (Urs Meier) had a bad game, it happens to all referees. That doesn't give anyone the right to send abuse and death threats to him, and the people who did should be well and truly ashamed of themselves.
Also the fact that the offenders were swayed by the glorified porn magazine known as The Sun doesn't really say much for them, does it?

    WTF.
    What are you confused about?
Anders Frisk was sent death threats by Chelsea fans for apparently saying something to the Barca coach at half time.

Urs Meier gets a bit of abuse from supporters who felt his reffing was shocking. Then not to help his cause, he made crap comments after the match.

FIFA weren't going to revoke Urs ref permit. Who else was going to let him know?

Referees are human and do make mistakes. We didn't try to abuse the ref that sent of Beckham. But when a ref disallows a gaol in the 90th minute, and then agrees ignorantly agrees with what he said after, theirs no excuse. Then he goes off on one about the English at the English backlash - how professional

Actually it stemmed from a harsh sending off from Didier Drogba and the commentary from Andy Gray certainly did not help. He said something along the lines of, "Deary me, Didier Drogba has been sent off for a ludicrous decision." Shortly after Barcelona take their advantage via goals, "Did it ever look like Chelsea were going to lose with Didier Drogba on the pitch?"

Martin Tyler claims, "They [Chelsea] could have won it by the end of the first half with two goals if Drogba scored."

Whilst I know and accept that commentators need to do their job in making the game, they need to to be careful what they say because quite often they can help aggravate circumstances like this. Surprised this wasn't mentioned when it happened to be honest.

Disrespect for referees whether in Urs Meier's case or Anders Frisk is not tolerable. All you're doing is continuing the image of the game as other follower of sports will tell you - diving, thuggery, lack of diplomacy, riots etc.

And there's me thinking that passionate commentators are going out of the game.

Can't stand it when a commentator is so unbiased and unfazed by a game. No passion.

    This season Arsenal..
    • Are currently 5th in the league
    • Battling with their local rivals Spurs for 4th spot
