The Student Room Group

From Med student to consultant, and all the bits in between.

Ok so can someone clarify the process because i am so confused as to how it all fits together, this is what i have so far:

Med school (4-6yrs)

Graduate -> F1 training (you get pre-registration with GMC)
-> F2 training (when finished you get full GMC registration)

Apply for ST/CT training (for however long the particular area you choose requires) ST goes up to 7?

And then you become a specialist registrar? And then you can apply to be a consultant?

As you can tell i am very confused, and have no idea :o: So if anyone could fill in the blanks with the relevent info e.g. exams, registrations and any other useful info that would be very helpful!

to be fair I found it quite confusing when searching for it
having a rough idea in your head is different from knowing it in detail, which is the part I found difficult

someone gave me this link which is really helpful

Its got to be worth stickying that somewhere, of even better, stickying it, putting the pdf up as images, and locking this forum only leaving current medical students open.

Good work lekky, have a virtual biscuit as they don't PM well.

bad plan stan

then your current medics forum will be spammed by us pesky applicants wanting help from current medics :p:

Perhaps you could have it barred with a password
that they only give out at medical enrollment :p:

You have the outline of it. I don't think you need to get into nitty gritty details at this stage. For example there are exams to be taken at various stages but the details vary significantly from speciality to speciality so it is hard to generalise.

If one wants to be cynical considering the vast oversupply of doctors by the time we get there too one can add several years in non training posts.

I'm not entirely sure, when our new building opens they will up the year sizes to 250 here, (over the last few years class size has gone from 50 to 150).
