I loved lord of the rings but despite being a fantasy fan found it hard to get into at first. I get the impression pride and prejudice is more of a girls book am I right?? I think both were probably boosted by their television/film status though.
My personal favourite at the moment is Captain Corelli's Mandolin - I love de Bernieres narrative style. It should have come much higher.

shush, you should not gender stereotype.

and nero, but the lydia/whickham thing is just trying to emphasises how the faults of society, such as in the marridge, Mrs Bennets reaction, the towns reaction etc.

Also its key to the plot!
