Foreign holidays and mosquitoes

I think I'm allergic to mosquito bites: whenever I'm bitten, the bites swell up to the size of satsumas and go really red. Not attractive.

However, I think I've just discovered a cure, and I wanted to point it out to everyone who suffers a similar affliction. Take 500mg of vitamin B1 (also known as Thiamin) every day for about a week before you go on holiday, and keep taking it for the length of the holiday. It worked for me.

You'll still get bitten, but the bites won't cause much of a problem: they won't swell, and they probably won't itch as much as normal.

Anyone else got any health-realted tips for fellow forumites about to embark on a foreign holiday?

Btw, tip number 2: Get travel insurance that allows you to pay the voluntary excess only, rather than paying everything and having to claim it back.

Depends on the country. We went to Turkey and my boyfriend's mum was trying to make us get tetanus jabs but we never got round to it - I always thought Europe and surrounding areas were a pretty safe bet.

My mate's going to Peru soon and has to get a whole armful of jabs. Not nice.

thanks for mentioning this now, we got bitten to shreds in Kos
I'm in Taiwan right now. I got mozzy bites last week and they swelled up horribly. I went to the doctors and they prescribed some stuff but i've no idea what it was! Seemed to work tho, and I have had bites since but they haven't swelled up.

I've just come back from Majorca and I have 12 bites! One of them is really red and swollen, it looks horrible. I'm going to the Dominican Rupublic for 2 weeks soon and I had to go and get a hepititus injection today, as well as malaria tablets to take for the next 6 weeks!

Get some vitamin B1 as well! Can't recommend it enough. You can get it from Holland & Barratt.
