No look at my link, it's got everything you need.

We're not getting anywhere arguing about links
Sure, but ... he gave that link and now he's complaining about it because the link had opened a porn site, well ... that didn't happen in my pc.

as for links, pestpatrol works seems to show the problem ok but second link says "cannot find server"

on my add/remove program list theres 2 which seem to be unwelcome:

    active alert and
    internet optimiser

theres also a "viewpoint media player (remove only)" which thought i dont recognise i imagine its the above 2 causing the problems
Yes it looks like those two are the problem. but i suspect that you'll have to do a bit more than just remove them from the control panel. ie. remove files from windows explorer and you may have to remove some registry keys.

If you don't need the AOl get rid of it. You don't need to have 2 internet explorers that could conflict with each other. If you haev Tiscali on your computer and you don't need it, also get rid of it.

I'm currently on a gap year. I'm working as a computer technician. I have a fair amount of knowledge about viruses and spyware etc. as i've had to fix my computer a few times because of them.

i think i have found at least part of the problem, theres a few little nasties in my windows-downloaded programs folder (the multi dist, and adult links ones and other number ones, right besides my yahoo chess and pool)

one final point please, theres a "Shockwave Active X control" too - i have come across active x a lot though not sure what it is? shall i try and get rid of this as well or is it harmless?

    Shockwave should be fine.

I think you are only scraping the surface of the problem though. Go to windows explorer and see if you have any of these files:

    c:\program files\internet optimizer\actalert.exe
    programfilesdir+\internet optimizer\actalert.exe
    programfilesdir+\internet optimizer\optimize.exe

You could have some values in the registry too.
