when i applied for housing awhile back, i marked october 1 as my move in date since it said you need to arrive at least one week before term starts (oct. 10). however, i just realized that move-in dates start september 25 .... does anyone know if kids really start moving in that early? i feel like it's a bit premature since orientation and registering doesn't seem to get started until october, but then again, i don't want to move in late when everyone's already gotten to know each other.

also- since i was assigned a dorm with a 52 week lease, does anyone know how hard/easy it would be to possibly switch and find a room in one of their other dorms with a shorter lease once i arrive in london?

    thanks.

i'm the only one on this site going to LUA as far as i know.. i can't remember what move in date i put, if it's actually important ill ring closer to september and ask 'em when i can move in.. pretty sure you can move in when you like as long as you've started paying for the room.

as for changing, ring up the housing people and ask, which one did you get? and what are you studying?

i was assigned to ewen henderson court. it seems a bit out there and i don't know how good the area is, but supposedly it's really close to the tube so that's a plus. i called up the accomodation offices a couple weeks ago about switching dorms, but the man was very vague. he just told me to check in with their offices when i arrive.

i'll be doing criticism, communication and curation at central saint martins. from what i've been reading, there doesn't really seem to be the concept of electives in the uk, but i'd really like to get back into graphic design too.

    you?

ewen henderson seems a nice place, it's still close compared to furzedown and some of the others.

i'll be doing journalism at college of communication (elephant and castle), staying in Julian Markham.

And for some time I thought that I was the only one going to UAL! I will also move to London to study in LCC (Graphic and Media Design - Typography). My room will be in Brooke Hall. My first choice was Manna Ash and the second was Julian Markham. I was a bit upset about the result, but I guess staying in Camberwell will do. It will have to.

I will come to London already on Sep 17th so I'm trying to find accomodation that early. They will confirm in Aug if I can get my room in Brooke Hall that early. If not, then it'll be one nice week...

I asked about changing rooms and they said that moving to popular halls is very difficult and unlikely to happen. I also asked about changing the length of the tenancy but they said that that is possible ONLY if you find someone to replace you for the rest of the time. In the summer time it might be a bit easier because of some language course students.

If you want to terminate your tenancy, you may do so for the charge of £50. They have some weird rules.. All of the tenancies start Sep 25 and last until Jul 15 or Sep 24, I think.

That's about it for what I know. But I'm glad to hear that there are some other people going to UAL as well!!!

my first choice was manna ash too.

i had no idea i could terminate my lease early for only 50 pounds. but would that mean i get the remaining months' rent refunded?

I'm not 100% sure about this but that's how I understood my tenancy agreement. In my case I will be paying my rent once a month so I will not make any deposit payments. That's why there wouldn't occur any problems with paying back the rest of the rent... You might want to contact the housing services for that.

I applied for Manna Ash and got it ...I suppose you can move in whenever you like if you pay the rent before the date they expect you to move in. You're best off calling them and double-checking. Good luck!

Is anyone a postgraduate applicant at UAL? Is there seperate housing for us? Or just Julian? I 'm an international student (USA) possibly entering the LCC.

There is no special housing for post graduate students at UAL. You'll be mixed in halls with BA students or even foundation students!

    wooooaaaah!!

i didnt realise that there were so many people here going to UAL!!

ahh joys of halls of residence. i was at cedars (part of furzedown) in tooting this past year. far out in zone 3 which meant long commute to college. (had to travel to fulham by bus before the college moved to millbank which took hours!) of course i didnt choose furzedown, i chose manna ash and various others which dont seem to be in the booklet this year round.

i moved in a bit early into my halls, so i can get used to it and meet people as they move in! i moved out a month before my contract ends as i was doing foundation and that finishes earlier. but didnt get any money back as couldnt find anyone to take my room. they said they were looking for rooms for english lang students but they usually take the rooms that are already empty as people before them dropped out etc. so just dont rely on getting some rent money back cos you prob wont.

most of the halls have 42 wks lease unless its a shared house (eg in whitechapel) where its a 52 wks there. just make sure you check the info.

good luck everyone! may see you around

I'm feeling a bit miffed. Last year when I lived in JMH and started my BA at LCC I came on here and NOBODY knew what I was on about. And now there is a freaking little club. Humph! Lol.

JMH is the best, Mahmood rocks and so do the Shell garage guys!

It's a great place to live, it's not particularly noisy but is good for socialising, right by take aways, the 24 hour shell garage is next door (those guys are don, i went in yesterday and got kisses and cuddles from them hahaha), right by LCC and also very close to the train station, tube station, bus stops right outside to all major points. And Mahmood rocks. Treat the guy with respect he changes your lightbulbs!
