Implant (Contraceptive)

I had to go to a family planning clinic to get my next three months of pill today and the lovely lady there told me about the injection and implant. I'm well interested in the implant - three years of protection - woo! She said it usually stops your periods - again another woo. But then the sheet said that they could be regular or they might stop.

Does anyone know which it is? The implant is only of use to me if it stops the periods for the three years, or I may as well continue taking the pill constantly like I do now. Thanks

It depends on the person. If someone usually has quite light periods, they might stop completely thanks to the continual progesterone dose; if you normally (i.e. not on the pill or whatever) bleed quite a lot then you probably will still bleed, but more lightly.

I'm on the injection....you get an increased appetite so you need to fill up on fruit etc to avoid weight gai. My mood can change in a matter of minutes and I'm always bloated. I also have bleeding every single day! I've been on it for over a year and I'm going for another jab today and I'm going to ask about something to stop the bleeding. I'm giving it one last try to see if it will settle down...don't use it! Go for the implant although it really does depend on the individual as to how bad the side effects are. You could bleed every day or not have anything at all. x x x

ok i went for a jab today, told the nurse about my problem and she said that it shouldn't be happening after a year and i've been advised to go on the implant. www.fpa.org.uk has lots of contraception advice

Is it just me or are the Family Planning people encouraging more people to try different sorts of contraception other than the pill, more recently? Ive been going for a few years for the pill and they always just give it to me without mentioning any other options, but the last time i went with my friend and they seemed like they wouldnt take no for an answer telling us about the implant and the injection! My friend was in a complete rush and just wanted to get out of there with her pills but this woman kept ranting on at her about the implant. I mean, there's nothing wrong with that or anything... but if people say no that means no! Makes me think they're on PRP on something! They also don't stock yasmin, so that will be my last trip there....

I think the implant sounds scary. My friend had it done, you can FEEL the needle in her arm. She only has her period every couple of months, so she loves it, but I would never get it done, esp. not after reading all this.

People are being encouraged to try different types because not everything suits everyone. I'm not allowed to go on the pill because my aunty had a thrombosis and my dad and grandads had heart disease and I can't use the coil cos my aunty did and it made her infertile.

Yeah but my point was that people seem to be practically being forced into trying something else even though they're perfectly happy with what they've got!

Hmmm can't say I have ever had that experience....they've only ever gone through everything with me, given me their advice and I've taken it. Maybe family planning clinics and Dr's have a different approach....I use my Dr's Surgery as they have my complicated family history notes.

yeah, doctors are completely different, they just want you in and out of the room as quick as possible.

The clinic recently though seem to have gone absolutely crazy and were just *not* listneing to my friend when she was saying she didn't want the implant. she was in there about 40 mins, listening to this enthusiastic woman ramble on!

Hmmm my Dr has been great! Has anyone got condoms from a family planning clinic? I usually buy them but it's getting a but pricey.
:: loves the little tube in her arm ::

there very picky about people using the implant. they like to make sure you want it cause basicaly it costs them like £100 were as a packect of pill is like 15p or something. i've had min in since sept ish last year. maybe a tad earlier not exactly sure.

the woman was telling me the implant is a little better than pills also i think. and more reliable for some people ... cause its just there for 3 years!
they tried convincing me to use the Patch.... but i have ahostory of DVT in my fam lol.

i was gonna go for the jab but they said the implant is better for your system and it recovers faster.

but my sisters mates body rejected it and she had to go into surgary cause her bodywas trying to destroy it of something...

yep, hundreds of them.

if you dont say anything they'll only give you 18/24 but I think you can get up to 36 in one go if you ask for more...

Edit: I was replying to Clairey about condoms if anyone wondered.

they are kept in the big locker and they give you a pic and mix bag...

Brook are more generous than the FPC then it seems! They'll just give you 24 for 6 months... hmm.

So you just go in there and say : hello, please may I have some condoms?
Reply 19
err..... well i usually get them when i go for my pill, so they just really say 'would you like any condoms?' at the end of the appointment.

but yeah, basically, find out their opening hours and say you've come for some condoms. you still have to register and that though, which is a pain.
