In the "caring profession" there really isn't an excuse for any of these things, all of which have happened to me several times:

- being rough when examining you (ow ow ow - and do they stop when you tell them to? No. Don't be silly, it doesn't hurt.)
- not listening properly
- not caring about your explanation or problem
- telling you you’re being stupid and generally fobbing you off
- discouraging you from doing what is best for you (a doctor tried to talk me OUT of going on the pill when I was 16. I had no reason not to go on, it was clearly a personal issue of his)
- being told you're NOT things, when you clearly are. After a general anaesthetic I was in that gown (and nothing else) and a tiny sheet in a cold ward and I was told I wasn't cold!!

Of course I'm not saying all healthcare professionals are like this, but when I think about it this sort of thing has happened to me well over 50% of the time I've been to see someone. And that's just too high.

yeah....when i had just hit 16 my doctors tried to persuade me to go on it and they ask me questions like 'do you smoke' etc every time i go into the doctors and they say its only for medical purposes to put in your file..... - the last doctor said that at my previous appointment :frown: yeah not all are like that at all Helenia but just a majority of them are unfortunately....only found 2 doctors in my lifetime who were really nice...... :frown: xoxo

I was once shouted at by a dentist when I went for my check-up. She was saying how I hadn't managed to clean my teeth properly blah blah blah.
And I was nine.

Thank goodness I've never needed to see her again.

Nope. I can remember the nurse was a total cow when I was getting my head stitched, but otherwise, my last orthadontist and dentist were nice and I've never had a bad doctor (although a really hairy one named Dr. Wolff was quite scary  ).

just because you don't understand the reasons for the questions, doesn't mean they are pointless.

Id had quite a few instances where Ive been to the doctors and been made to feel very small. Ive had doctors accusing me of making an illness worse, not even listening, being generally rude and on once occassion, a doctor even told me to "grow up and stop being childish" when I said I wanted to go back onto some medication he had refused me a repeat prescription for.

Doctors are there for a reason, if they dont want to have the 'inconvenience' of having to see patients, then they shouldnt be in that profession!

Doctors can only make you feel small if you let them.

You also have to remember that, although there's no real acceptable reason for being short with a patient, Docs are running to stupid Govt guidelines and timings - almost to the point of compromising patient care. This alone frustrates.

Never be afriad of saying to your doctor that you don't agree, don't understand, or do not appreciate the way your being spoken to.

The last time a doctor was really horrible was when I had broken my arm in two places after slipping over on the wet grass on the playing fields at school. He was highly unsympathetic, and put the plaster cast on wrong so it actually did my arm more damage than good. He even refused to acknowledge this and my mum had to go private to fully repair my arm.

One of the worst things ever to happen to me.

Its not possible that when asked again you then say "yeh i smoke 10 a day"?
You can take a 2 histories a day apart and will always find plenty of inconsistencies.

Sure some docs area bit cold, bit uncaring etc but its hard not to get a bit jaded when you have the same stuff day in day out.
not making excuses for them or anything though.

have any of you in the past had a doctor or suregon or anyone in the medical profession be quite hateful to you?

my dermatologist is a ****** :frown: she made me cry the first time i never went near her :frown: xoxo

awww must be something about dermatologists... i was referred unwillingly by my doctor a few years ago and the first thing he did was to moan about the number of teenage pregnanices! he then went on to imply that i was going to get myself prgenant, in which case it wouldn't be safe to take the tablets. he then totally ignored my mum and just kept going on as if he knew everything! i was so angry, i never went back again!

I think doctors are the spawn of satan. I mean, look at all the excellent, hard abd distressing work many did last Thursday.

Keep things in context guys. Doctors are human. There are good ones and bad ones. Don't tar them all with the same brush.
