Dumbells - no.
It actually normally depends on the persons health and metabolism.

I have relatively large biceps, and the best way is to continue working with some that is not so heavy that you can't do 100 lifts. I personally used 7kg weights and the results I have to say were fairly impressive. Just concentrate on your biceps to get results.

I haven't done this for years now, and I still have them! I don't deserve to.

What do you call large?

Health and metabolism is a factor, but how else are you meant to build muscle without resistance? ie. dumbbells.

Concentrating on biceps to get results? triceps make 2/3 of the arm, if anything, i'd say concentrate on the heads of the triceps.

To the original poster - forget about the whole 'if i touch weights ill be massive' thing, you won't; trust me.

Why don't you go downa gym and actually do a proper full body routine, not just biceps (bicep boy).

If you insist, bicep curls, and more bicep curls. You'll look comical though.

How old are u first mate. It could be that you just aint started bulkin out yet. Until testosterone really kicks in trainin wont make a big deal of difference.

16 turning 17 in a few days.

But I don't want to bulk, its just that my arms are so incredibly thin and weedy. I just want to bulk them up a bit. I can't really afford to go to the gym at the moment, with driving lessons etc.

So are the dumbells a good idea?

Reply 5

Like i said, you won't bulk.

If you want to have a bit of a bicep, then yes.

Totally agree.

Bulk does give you a helping hand. You could train mighty hard and not get anywhere, then protein and carbohydrates then become a factor.

You can concentrate on your biceps only. I've never seen someone have massive biceps with a skinny frame. Although you can have large biceps and have small wrists still.

Large biceps depend on the proportion of your body. I think thats fair.

I don't want to bulk just bigger arms in general! Whats the best way in doing this?

Reply 8

The best thing to do is chin-ups. They exercize your piceps, but make you much more powerful as well .They also exercize your back. Buy a chin-up bar for a fiver and it'll work just as well.

Couldn't have said better. Simple compound movements.

Well if you really do want bigger arms in general, work your triceps, biceps, forearms and shoulders. But bear in mind that should just those muscles get large, you'll not only look odd, but it wouldn't be good for your body either, as you'll be creating an imbalance. I remember being told that there is a certain amount of interdependency between muscle groups, so working say..shoulders, whilst giving your chest/traps/lats/triceps will cause a strength and size imbalance will will probbaly affect your body in some way. I'd take a guess and say that the involved joint would be affected badly.

Simple 5kg or 4kg to start with - do 20 at a time 3 times a day.

When this becomes a bit easier, increase the rate to 50 times per 3 times daily.

When this becomes easier - go for 8 or 7kg and do the same routine.

This should work regardless of your frame. If all you want it bigger biceps, this should see you improve over a period of 3 months. You will start to notice a difference.

OH MY GOD

worst advice ever....

okay now listen up, if you want to pack on some mass so your little sister cant power slam you for the remote everyday you need to get your ass in gear. youd think with all the bone head fools out there with 24/7 pumped traps that gaining a few inches of muscle around your twig arms would be easy. learn this first, it isnt.

ill break this down for you.

one- your scrawny ass needs to eat. EATTTT. no fizzy drinks, no sweets, no pre-pagaged meals, no "5% fat/1 calorie" crap - yeah they've fiddeled with some numbers but they've stuffed that ***** with sodium and other BS to get round the fact they've just sold you some crappy food with ****** nutriants.

do eat - PROtein, tuna, chicken (avoid the fried stuff, but if your 6'5 and 8 stone, then please dont) red meat but not as regualr as the others, vegies, brown bread/rice/pasta, low GI foods, complex carbs, cottage cheese, OATS - that porridge gramps been eating all his life is why hes lived for so long, eat that for breakfast EVERYDAY.

you should be eating every few hours, each meal should contain a decent source of protein, in the evening limit your carbs (i.e. better to heve bread pre 5pm and broccoli after 5pm)

two - the GYM. get over to the nearist gym, the less lame ass cardio machines the better. ask Mr Personal Trainer whos got quads bigger then your whole frame to give you a work out. he'l look at you, the metaphore for a peice of paper turned side ways and most likely hook you up with a full body work out routine, if not, slap him upside his head. you need to work ALL of your body. because 1, you wont gain as much mass in the long run and 2, you'l be some lop sided freak and be more prone to injuries then Fergi playing running back for the Dallas Cowboys.

SMASH them weights hard, but REST, no 1000 reps or crunchs, that wont do *****. have decent breaks between workouts and one decent 1 hour work out is all you need. no more

your body grows and builds while its resting, so sleep IS important.

three - right now your stupid as hell so start reading up about fitness and excerise. your on the net, use some of the smart ass skills you've used all your life to stop you from getting your ass kicked every week from the dudes that use thier testosterone

last bits of advice:

you'l learn to love it, not the first week, not the week after, maybe a month or 6 weeks later, you'l see visable results, you'l be stronger, fitter and that bit more sexy-er....oozing with confidence, counting them protein, carb and fat ratios while throwing 20 times your body weight around the gym will all be worth it.

My god does no one bloody listen to what I have to say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

sorry for having to shout but this ridiculous, I've said the same thing 3 times.

I DO NOT want to bulk up or PACK SOME MASS!

I just want some bigger arms, as it looks kinda odd when I wear tight t-shirts etc.

Spar thanks for the advice but please read what I'm asking for you just wasted a good 10 minutes.

Basically what I want is normal/slightly muscley arms as opposed to my almost anaeroxic like arms i have now.

Whats the best work out thing I can buy for which I can work out at home to improve the muscle size of my arms.

Hey guys, at the moment I have crappy skinny arms, they are tiny and very weak, especially my left arm.
I was thinking I should get some muscle on these things, what would be the best way to do it?
Would a pack of dumbells work, something like this:

Nooo....With dumbells at your home, with limited equiptment, there are only a few things you can do, e.g. curls. This may build up your biceps a bit, but you said you want big arms. Your triceps make up over two thirds of your upper arm.
Do the math. Anyway, you dont want big arms which are outta proportion with the rest of your body, would look stupid! Concentrate on compound exercises, like bench press, squats, deadlifts and pullups. These work a lot of muscles all at once, and are gr8 for adding bulk!

Reply 16

lol... just buy the cheap dumbell set, and it has a crappy piece of paper with different excersises on it, just do a few of those daily and dont forget to do it ._. and slowly should make a difference - cheap, ineffiective but should be enough?

Bulking up and packing mass is getting bigger muscles you ass! You can't develop your muscles without the correct diet, and like everyone has said if you just work your arms you'll look daft because the rest of you ie your chest will still be 'anorexic'

Well read post 13 and you've got your answer!
Trust me, as a person who had sone exactly that.

The big long essay that guy wrote is correct if you want to go to those lengths. But then eating the right food takes TIME. It would help you to eat protein and carbs anyway.

Reply 19

Is GarageMc anorexic all over, or just his arms?

I'm suprised no-one's asked this. It would save a lot of time.

Anyway, forget the weights, do some chin-ups. That was your triceps will also be built up.
