Did you just get a dull thud over a large area, or was it a pointy jab right into your eye? If it's the latter, you might want to wash you eye out to get rid of anything that might have made its way there. Unless its continually stinging or bleeding, or you can definitely tell something has lodged in, I wouldn't worry.

Can you open the eye? Did the branch go into the actual eye or did you shut it just in time?

Im no doctor but Id put a cool flannel on it for a little while and see how it is. You could always phone nhs direct.

Have you got someone you can go and show and ask them their advice on going to see the doctor?

If your eye, or the surrounding region, is bleeding, do. If you can't see (even after your eyesight should have cleared), do. If it's just a black eye, don't bother.
It's just created a cut in the corner im not sure if its deep but there's not a lot of blood, there is also a small cut above and its swolen a bit. It's starting to feel a little bit better now. Thanks for your advice

I have just whacked myself in the eye with a garden branch (the divi that I am  ) and I was just wondering whether to bother going to the doctors?

I think if you have had the time and patience to start up your computer and post here then there can't be much wrong with you. Can there? You can see, you can walk, think straight and obviously aren't rolling around in pain. Who needs 2 functional eyes, anyway?

May I also point out you have been here ten minutes, that's ten minutes in which you could have either i) washed your eye out, ii) began walking/driving to doctors/hospital

If there's a cut on the actual eyeball, get it looked at. If it's anywhere else, you don't really need to worry unless it's really deep. But it's best to be safe with eyes.

Well, seriously, if you had actually hurt yourself badly, where would be the first place you went? Local doc's or an internet forum?

if you've cut your actual eye make sure you go to a GP or A+E. It can be just slightly serious....

Around the eye I wouldn't worry.

Exactly.
Poke it with a stick, Then if its not bad enough to get it seen by a doctor, it soon will be and you will have a good reason to go!
