Why is everone on this forum obsessed with getting into oxbridge, to be honset speaking to friends going there now they sound like they are having an OKAY time (like "o yeah its great") but it also sounds really quite boring, not much partying or people up for a laugh and letting their hair down.

Daft to stereotype thousands of people and assume all the students there will behave the same way. Fraid not. Peoples working and socialising habits vary hugely, we've got pretty much all the spectrum covered in Oxford.

hey lala, are you the original lala that used to yell at me about grammer? trying to figure out if that was you or lou p lou?

Oxbridge is what the people there make it, no more, no less, in good ways and in bad ways. They work loads there, but they also have lots of fun.

Of course, i am going there and i dont consider myself to be all THAT boring. Tehre are no doubt some quirky intersting people as well as some right squares. But lets be honest, i know those going there on this forum will deny it, ive been there and spoken to friends there, maybe its cos they like me are from london, but they say it is comparatively bland. Not to say its not fun in different ways. But once you enter this forum its seems that the bane of ones life is to go to these places, like its some sort of far off utopia.

I'm sure there are plenty of chances to have fun in Oxbridge, but I think it partly depends on what you want from a uni, maybe people looking for party central don't bother with Oxbridge.

Well, I want to go there as well, and if I were a party animal I'd have chosen a different uni I want to study in a small and relatively quiet place and I think Cambridge is a great place and exactly what I'm looking for. I've gone through the utopia stage, I'm seeing it a bit more realistically now, if I don't get in it's not the end of the world. But I still am keen (but not obsessed) to get in.

I went through that whole 'Cambridge is the absolute best place' thing too, but I'm completely over it now. I still think it's lovely, and if I get in I'll go there, but I'm actually pretty thrilled at other offers I've had. In fact, if I get an offer from Cambridge, (and after the interview I had I probably won't), I'm not completely sure I wouldn't rather go somewhere else.

If something is the bane of one's life, it means that it's ruining your life - which is not exactly how people here view Oxbridge. I know there is a disturbing level of obsession with it, but there's not much that can be done.

I've just finished my first term there, which was possibly the best two months of my life. I'm not a huge party animal, I wasn't out every night, but I had my fair share of going out, getting drunk and so on. It's perfectly possible to do. Yes, you do have to work hard, but that's only to be expected.

ummmmmmmmmm. it ruins there lives as far it makes them recluses, with no real dreams other than dispropotianate ambition to get into these places.

though admittedly i did initially have completely worng idea of what the word "bane" meant. thanks though, i wont use it wrong again and feel like a mug!

its good to hear that your having a good time, makes me hopeful that i'll have a good time, which ultimately im sure i will.

Spot on. We have geeks here, we have jocks (ie the rugby teams...), we have our drinkers and our clubbers. And in many cases we have people that are a healthy mix of all of them (i like to think im one of them, cept i drink a tad excessively).
However, one point of note (which doesnt bother us squat)
Cambridge is soooooooo dead out of term. This town is literally the most university based place ive ever seen. only 1 club stays open out of term, and the one supermarket is deader than hitler!

I really don't think anybody here's that bad.

As for there being a lot of people here who want to go to Oxbridge, it's really to be expected - people who visit a forum called uk-learning are probably more concerned with schoolwork than your average teen.
