I just came back from my Gold Duke of Edinburgh and I have three big blisters on each foot. I just want to know, on average how long does it take to go away as I have my assessed D of E in two weeks time, also what can I do to speed up the process? Pop it (bad idea but tempting)?

Ooohh...I can SO sympathise. I've done both Bronze and Silver D of E, and had the same problem on both occasions. I can entirely empathise, trust me. And, I'm not being funny or anything, but mine still haven't gone away. Normal blisters heal, but D of E one's don't!!! They're that bad!

DON'T pop it, whatever you do. 8 times out of 10 it will become infected as a result, but also, don't put a plaster on it, as allowing it access to oxygen helps the healing process. However, having said this, it's very uncomfortable and inconvenient not to put a plaster on it, as usually it hurts so much it needs cushioning, no?

Also, do you own Converse shoes? Seriously if you do, don't wear 'em! My Converse All Stars seemed to aggrevate my blisters so much after D of E.

Next time, on your assessment, wear special blister plasters - they're like gel, and they do help. Also, this may sound stupid, but when I did away with my walking socks, I found I didn't get as many blisters!!

But, to be honest, they'll probably still be there in two weeks, if they're anything as bad as mine. And then my killed on the real thing, however, you've just got to block it out haven't you, and grit your teeth or whatever.

But you don't want yours to be there. So I seriously recommend resting, and wearing footwear as little as possible. If this means you stay at home for the remainder of the next two week, so be it. I think the reason mine took so long to heal, was because I kept making them worse with shoes...

Good Luck. Also, make sure your walking boots are the right size.

Ooh....gutted. :frown: :frown: Sore blisters for you, my friend! Ah well, you're older than me, and probably tougher than me, so I'm sure you'll be able to endure the pain of the D of E blisters! I'm going to Geneva next year, something to do with the European Parliament, I've already been to Strasbourg and Paris with 'em...

Have a nice time anyway. And good luck with Gold. x

i used to row, both hands were just one big blister during term time...

usually after 24 hours or so it starts to dry, then over 3-5 days the puss goes away leaving it numb but with dead skin over the top of the empty blister.

if you remove the skin then it will hurt like hell for a day or so then gradually dry up and be back to almost normal within the week.

if you dont remove the skin then it dries more slowly but less painfully until your left with a callous.

god i know too much about these things

Oo I recommend you fast-track-read it before you go, got a lot to do with CERN (in fact a proportion of the book takes place there, talking about particle accelerators etc)

hmm......... I'll think about it... don't really like fast-track-read, reminds me of A levels, yuck!
pop blisters definately! i did bronze silver and gold and got large blisters on silver and a small one on bronze. definately better to pop it. for your real expedition you can buy blister preventing socks (my friend used them i think they worked a bit) and blister plasters are good too but expensive. i found that wearing a thin pair of socks under normal hiking socks helped..well i didn't get any blisters on gold anyway! good luck - where are you doing gold?
