Giving Blood after a heavy night?

RIght, so I break up from school next thursday, and would like to spend Thursday night celebrating in the usual way - getting pissed. But I have an appointment to give blood the next day (at 1.15 in the afternoon to be precise) and I'm worried that there will be too high a concentration of alcohol still in my blood for me to give blood. I'm not an alcoholic and I know when to stop drinking in order to stop myself from doing anything really stupid, but I can hold my drink quite well and will probably be drinking quite alot.

So does anyone know if my blood will be rid of the *toxins* the next day?

Its probably not gonna be suitable, it takes an hour to process 1 unit of alcohol, 20 units, thats 20 hours, so well into the next day - don't they tell you not to drink for 48 hours or so before giving blood?

You've got a choice to make, give blood or get pissed, its a toughie.
give blood, someones gonna need it

Bless, someone wakes up from their operation feeling mildly wasted.

After major surgery you're so drugged up you wouldn't notice  it took me about two days to be able to put a coherent sentence together, and I still don't remember more than a minute of the three hours my girlfriend spent with me

Why are people talking about operations now?

You're applying to do medicine at university and can't even answer this question?! Wow...

Alright alright, don't have a go at me, I was just enquiring as I wasn't sure, obviously im going to choose giving blood over getting pissed aren't I? All I want to know is what is the sensible amount to drink in order that it won't affect the blolod I am going to give, or should I not drink at all? If it takes an hour to process one unit of alcohol, then could I drink the equivalent of about 3 glasses of wine, which would be 3 units and therefore take 3 hours to process? My appointment's in the afternoon so it should be rid of the alcohol by then, shouldn't it?

Surely you need an operation to recieve blood.....you don't just swallow it you know....

It will probably be a waste of a donation.

Ps - the an hour a unit to process is, on the whole, ********!

Last time I spoke with the NBS the line was that so long as you’re not intoxicated on the table i.e. prone to collapsing when the blood is taken they don’t really mind. Having said that you probably don’t want to place undue stress on your body, being both hung-over and losing that 475ml, so it would probably be best to stay within your own limits. If your concerned about the effect on your donation you could mention it to the nurse when she’s going through your answers to the questionnaire.

Getting pissed is bad for you anyway (:p:) but well done for giving blood!

It's alright, I've changed my appointment to the thursday.

Is it alright to get pissed after losing a pint of blood?
