This displaced the existing Doctor of Philosophy degree in some Universities for instance the D.Phil. (higher doctorate in the faculty of philosophy) at the University of St Andrews was discontinued and replaced with the Ph.D. (research doctorate). However some UK universities such as Oxford and Sussex retain the D.Phil. appellation for their research degrees, as do German and Scandinavian universities.

I thought that u earn the title Doctor if u get ur PHD from universities like Oxford or Cambridge. They are the same but the 'Doctor' sounds better as a title

I thought you got the title 'Doctor' no matter where you get a PhD for D.Phil from.

Achieving a PhD earns you the title of Doctor regardless of which institution awarded the qualification.

D.Phil. and Ph.D. both mean Doctor of Philosophy. If a person holds one then he/she are entitled to be called 'Doctor'.

What's the discrepancy? Why do some universities use D.Phil and not the world known Ph.D?

DPhil is english (Doctor of Philosophy) and is the traditional form in the UK (hence used by Oxford).

PhD is latin, but actually started it's usage in US universities, it has been adopted by most UK universities as an international standard.

Oxford don't do a PhD

Doctor means you have a doctorate (or an honourary one in the case of medics). It doesn't signify what uni you went to...
