I had absolutely no idea a "Photography" GCSE exists. That's rather unusual...

I hadnt heard of it either. I would have taken it if offered, im pretty good at photography, I have a Canon 350D (DSLR) and I have read huge amounts about photos and how to get them perfect.

What exam boards do it?

Reply 6

Markus - OCR is the exam board I'm doing

Mtbub - Not too sure really. It would have been insightful if the teacher wasn't such a B****, but quite interesting subject. You learn to develop your own photographs and enlarge photographs in a dark room.

Funnily enough, it is possible to take GCSE Photography using a camera phone providing it has the right lens zoom on it.

As someone who has done both GSCE and A-level photography I'd like to point out just what is wrong with that statement and counter all of those who say its a doss subject.

I got 2 As and 7 A*s at GCSE but I got a B in photography. Trust me, its not a doss. Loads of people treated it as such and failed. I cant say the same about something like food tech (which I didnt take) or textiles (which I did, that exam was a joke). The actual taking the photographs is only a small part of the story. And even then you dont just point and shoot. You need to focus, compose carefully and set the correct aperture etc. Then you have to manually develop the film and then develop each photograph in the darkroom. And you dont even get many marks for the photographs. Most of it is from the research; finding inspiration from artists, looking at a range of art and talking intelligently about the things you find. Also you have to experiment with different techniques such as toning, lith and negative prints. Its a lot of coursework. Especially at A-level and AS. Hardly anyone at my 6th form (an art college with a good photography department) got an A.

Ok I realise that turned into a rant.

We get the chance to do A level photography, but no GCSE :frown:... I'm stuck with old Art and Design.
