Pill.....

I know it's been said many times before. I've skipped one month's period before, but is it safe to miss 2 really? It's just i'm travelling over both.

I'm pretty sure you can miss up to three, but I think thats considered the maximum.

And I have a question too, I'm going away next week, and I normally take my pill at night, what do I do about the time difference?

I went to Hong Kong, 11 hours ahead, i normally take my pill at night too, but that meant really early in the morning, so NHS Direct suggested just taking it in the morning, they said it didn't matter really if it is an hour or two either side of when you usually take it. Say if you take it at 10 here, and you go somewhere 2 hours ahead, you change to 12, but you can probs just still take it at 10, or when you go to bed.
keep your phone or something on english time and have an alarm set maybe, that way it'll be the right time and you wont forget while you're having fun.

What I dont understand is why so many girls use the pill.

I mean just think how complicated it is - there are just a few examples shown here, i.e. what time to take it, what if you miss one, what if you're ill, what if you take other medication.

I'd suggest looking at differernt types of contraception.

Implant?
Injection?
Patch?
etc.....
(male pill) yeah like you'd ever get a guy to acutally take that - although my boyfriend, ever so sweetly, did offer - hes so wonderful to me

Don't just accept the pill cause its the first thing the doctor offers you.

We have a choice girls!

I was put off by the injection because a few close friends of mine tried it and it made them put on alot of weight. Im happy on the pill- I mean sure, there are a few things that can go wrong, but it works for me! *touch wood* hehe.

Yeah you're right the injection can do that - it is a major downside, I'm not trying to suggest they are perfect methods of contraception - I dont know if there is a perfect one (other then not doing it - which we know wont work)

it just made me angry when my doctor was so reluctant to even tell me about other methods of contraception - so i used the pill for ages cause i didnt even realise there was anything else out there - and the pill was really not working for me, and then when i asked a family planning nurse instead of my gp it turned out i had loads of options

and i just dont want other girls to think they have no other option than the pill like i thought

The pill is best for lots of people though! And it's the easiest to try first to see how you react, rather than putting 3 months of hormones straight into you with the injection that you can't take out. Also, i wouldn't want to go straight to the implant for the same reason, plus having to cut your arm to put it in!

Also, i like having my periods, as a sort of reassurance thing! Sounds weird but that's how i feel, so i wouldn't want a method that could stop them or muck them up.

I'm happy on the pill. I can skip periods comfortably, I have a good routine, it takes about 5 seconds to take and that's it.

Surely other medication can affect other hormonal methods too, as it's the same thing?

Oh, and my boyfriend is up for trying the male pill too. Though i think it's an implant and an injection as opposed to an actual pill. (The implant reduces male hormones so they don't start growing boobies from the injection of female hormones that prevents the sperm developing!)

How long does the injection last for?
Reply 11
12 weeks standard I think, although people may have their injections at slightly different times depending on the person e.g after 10 or 11 weeks.
just thinking about injections/implants makes me go all dizzy and strange. I have a serious thing about having sharp metal things stuck into me! the pill works just fine! and having periods is good for reassuring yourself that you're not pregnant!

I dislike the pharmacokinetic aspects of the injection method  How sad does that make me?

I would consider the implant in the future, but most people get started on the pill because it's cheapest and easiest to change if something goes wrong.

Pharmacokinetics is basically the study of rates at which a drug is metabolised/eliminated from the body. Different methods of administration have different profiles for this and will have different levels of drugs in the bloodstream at any time.

On this basis, I dislike the idea of the injection because it is simply one LARGE dose of hormones which is eliminated slowly over months, whereas the pill/implant maintain hormones at a roughly steady, much lower level. Seems healthier to me, though I haven't read much about it yet - I may do next year.

i dont mind remembering the pill, i have other things to take in the morning anyway its just part of my routine with my mug of coffee. And unless your going long haul i would still take my pill with my coffee even if it was 4 hours different.

Ooh, interesting.
While on the subject - if I go the docs to have my blood pressure checked on my pill-free week, will that affect the results? I.e if my blood pressure is higher on the pill will it only be high during the 3 weeks of pill taking, and then drop back down during the pill free week?

My mum had problems with blood pressure on the combined pill and after recently having changed to the combined pill from the mini pill three months ago I need to go and get my b/p checked. I only have one week before I go back to uni and that's my pill free week. Is it a waste of time me going? I dont want the results to be falsely ok, if you know what I mean!

To be honest I'm not 100% sure. I would say the best thing to do is to go along anyway and explain that you're on your week off, and ask if it would make a difference - they're more likely to know. I would suspect that any blood pressure changes would be long-term if the pill was causing them, but I can't be sure of that.
This is slightly off topic but does the pill make you put on weight?
