Pope meets and forgives Christmas Eve Mass attack woman

Pope Benedict XVI has had a meeting with the mentally disturbed woman who knocked him over at Mass on Christmas Eve, and has forgiven her.

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said the woman, Susanna Maiolo, told the Pope she was sorry for what had happened.

Father Lombardi added that the Pope expressed "his interest and best wishes" for her health.

The Vatican is continuing a legal case against Ms Maiolo.

The Pope inquired about Ms Maiolo's health and "wanted to demonstrate his forgiveness".
I think it's great that the pope has met her and forgiven her personally. The lady has mental health problems which may account for what she did. Still, I find it very strange that the Vatican is continuing their legal case, despite this forgiveness..?

edit: obviously I don't want to make this in to a religious / pro-religion / anti-religion thread, just a discussion about the events and the article itself. Thanks guys.

Poor lady. I'm sure forgiveness by the pope would be exactly what she doesn't want, if she attacked him...

So someone who doesnt like the pope is mentally unstable? says a lot about the way people like to pope see tehmselves as infalliable and loved by all and anyone who doesnt love them must be a bad person.
