# Moments question watch

1. Does the force through the centre of a beam act clockwise or anti-clockwise?

For example:

A______D_______C_______E________ _B
---------------------------------------

Where AB = 3m, AC = 1.5m, AD = 1m, AE = 2m.

Taking moments about A, would it be

1 x D + 1.5 x C = 2 x E + 3 x B
OR
1 x D = 1.5 x C + 2 x E + 3 x B

?

Thanks
2. It depends what direction the forces at D, C, E and B are in.
Also, I'm assuming the beam is in equilibrium?
3. Are any of B, C, D or E going up? cuz if they're all forces acting downwards and you take moments from A, then they're all clockwise.
4. Assume theyre all vertically downwards, and the beam is in equalibrium
5. Hang on, is C at the exact middle of the beam? If it is you ignore it, any mass directly over the pivot does not affect moments.

Wow, thats why I always get moment questions wrong. tyvm
7. Just to be sure, the equation would be

1 x D = 2 x E + 3 x B
if I'm taking moments from A?
