Just start AS level math by distance learning I it a snag on the first page its asking me to expand polynomials which is fine normally but one questions just got me totally confused,

    Expand: (1 + x + x^2)^2

The answer the book is giving me is 1 + 2x +3x^2 + 2x^3 + x^4 is this an error? If not if someone could show the working out for this question that would be fantastic :woo:

    (1 + x + x^2)^2
    = (1 + x + x^2)(1 + x + x^2)
    = 1(1 + x + x^2) + x(1 + x + x^2) +x^2(1 + x + x^2)
    = 1 + x + x^2 + x + x^2 + x^3 +x^2 + x^3 + x^4

    And so on.

Thanks a lot :woo: Is that a question you should normally be expected to learn at gcse level?

I think it's a bit beyond GCSE but it uses GCSE techniques (ie multiplying out brackets).
