    I personally think that it will overall disadvantage the person applying- not only do they risk getting caught but the person paid to write it will never have the same intrinsic knowledge of the person applying and therefore it will be very difficult to obtain the same style/persona in the statement- this comppared with a reference of that person very often makes it noticable that this person did not write the statement.

    At the end of the day, the only person they are cheating is themselves really. If they got accepted into awesome universities it would always be at the back of their mind ''am I here because of that PS?'' and they would begin to doubt themselves... probably.
