Hey everyone
Just stumbled across this thread, and thought I would try offer some advice.
In september i will be starting my second year of the IBFE program and i'm also IBFE Society President for this year.
Monkiwrensh: re the maths, as a few others have touched on you won't be given a choice which maths/stats mopdules you take, this will be based on your ability ie. whther you've just done GCSE, AS or A level. It's really not something to worry about, I 've heard that the 'basic' maths module is very straightforward and I know that the others aren't overly difficult. I know people who had done no maths at all post GCSE and had taken a gap year and they managed just fine.
The maths content within the first year finance/economics modules is relatively small, certainly nothing far beyond GCSE.
If you do meet any problems, there is a strong academic support stucture in place and I know people who booked extra tutorials in preparation for their maths exams. In all, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about!
Anna85: - I also rejected a BA Econ offer in favour of IBFE - I've never regretted this decision once! For econ or finance specialists it provides much more focus than BA Econ. It is a much smaller program, which I quite like cos I find you get to know much more people. Also, in the first year there is no great difference between the two programmes (for BA Econ fin/eco/bus specialists). One of my friends is on the BA Econ prog and was on every one of my courses this year, so I would think there would be opportunity to move over, even after the first year. (But you won;t want to!)
Anyway, I feel this is a good opportunity to plug IBFE SOC FRESHERS' WEEK EVENTS!!!
This year is a great time to be an IBFE student as the Society has much stronger uni support and we have the sports teams and mentor scheme coming into existence.
So far planned:
TUES 27TH SEP: FRESHERS' PARTY AT SCU BAR! FREE DRINKS, COMPETITIONS AND CHANCE TO WIN PRIZES!!!! USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO MEET YOUR FELLOW COURSE MATES WITHOUT THE RESTRAINT OF UNI SURROUNDINGSS!
MEET YOUR MENTOR!!! UNI TOUR AND A BITE TO EAT WITH YOUR PEER MENTOR FOR THE YEAR. ANOTHER GREAT CHANCE TO MEET OTHER IBFE STUDENTS.
Use the freshers' events to meet other IBFE'ers cos, as i mentioned, after freshers' week all social sciences get all mingled up (which is nice) but you lose track of who's on your course. It's nice to have a bunch of friends from your course and the IBFE Soc events really are the best place to find them.
Anyway if you guys would like any more info, feel free to pm me. Or if you have any sugeestions of further freshers' week activities, let me know.
I look forward to meeting you in freshers' week
