Mine was about the same, and it doesn't seem to have caused problems. Quality over quantity.
mine was just a bit shorter than my PS
the reference has a limit of 4000 char and 37 lines just like the PS
Mine was 677 words, so 3589 characters without spaces...So quite big! But the top two lines explain a little about the school.
I've never seen one

Short introduction - 2 sentances about GCSEs and how expected to do at A-Level.

3 Medium length paragraphs about each subject.

Paragraph about responsibilities in college.

Finishing parapraph about recommendation for the course.

That's about it.

References have the same limits as a personal statement, and as you can imagine personal statements vary in length - some people use all the space and considerdoingcrazythings to fit it all in whilst others use just over half.

If it's a reference from a school then it will usually include a bit about the school and what subjects you are doing - particularly if you're doing anything a bit different. So that might make it longer, but it isn't necessarily all about you.

And a long reference doesn't necessarily equal a good one. "Fred does his homework on time" is better than "Fred does his homework on time, but rarely does any work in school".
