Here's something I should probably already know but don't...

Are you only awarded no claims bonuses if the insurance policy is in your name (and not if you are just a named driver on the car)? I've been insured on three cars and a bus in Australia for a year but only as a named driver... In fact, even if being a named driver allowed for no claims bonuses, are international bonuses accepted by UK companies?

I ask because 1 year of no claims makes a near £1,000 difference to my insurance for the year.

    Cheers

Proper no-claims are only built up by the policyholder.

Some insurers now offer a kind of pseudo-no-claims discount system to named drivers who then chose to take out their own policies, but these are only honoured by the insurer that issued them and don't usually get you as much discount as real no-claims.

Yes depending on the country, but not as named driver.

Admiral said they would take my 3 years as a named driver into account if they could get the details from my insurer. I haven't taken out a policy to prove this though, it was just chatter on the phone with a salesman, after a post price comparison search cold call.
