who cares about haiti, some small country in the carribean that's never done anything for us and would probably burn british flags if they had the chance, but once again generous Britain is doing everything she can to spend money British people worked hard for on a peoples who have been ravaged by a totally random disaster in which we had no part. IMO all foreign aid should be cancelled immediately and charity should fill the gap, that worked fine in the asian tsunami.
No, it didn't. Governments all around the world contributed large amounts of monetary aid. Without it, the situation would have been insufferable.

How much is the UK gving to Haiti? $6 million? The British public donate $654 million to Asian countries during the Tsunami, as opposed to the Governments $140 million.

Considering the earthquakes they have had since then, its a total waste of money.

Should have encouraged them (those that lived in the countries where the earthquake struck by) to move to safer places instead of rebuilding somewhere for it to get knocked down again.

It seems to me that the western countries are the ones doing all the helping.

You NEVER see these third world countries doing anything to help each other. They always come to West for help, all the while blaming us for the crimes of our ancestors.

The tragic situation in Haiti should be the burden of charities, not the British taxpayer.
Maybe because they can't? They don't have the infrastructure to launch an international aid effort, the money to fund one, or the trained rescue teams and equipment needed.

If they could help they would, anyway how do you know that they haven't sent what help they can provide and the media are just concentrating on the efforts of their own countries?

    Haha greed?

No.. they get a lot less cash from the US government than uni's here get from the UK. And because of the money they have pretty much all the best uni's in the world.

In the vast majority of cases, these building would not have been knocked down if they were at a basic level of construction. For instance, in 2008 both Cuba and Haiti suffered the same storm however whilst 1,000 people died in Haiti and their entire infrastructure was ruined, only 4 died in Cuba and the country remained stable. This is a direct result of the fact that Haiti has been effectively raped by long periods of post-colonial oppression.

Clearly, foreign governmental aid will not tackle this. However it will go some way to ensure that the thousand affected in the immediate aftermath will not die. In the long-term, we need to stop trying to control Haiti's government and exploiting its citizens.

I think that whilst the economy is as ****** as it is, and we have such crazy budget deficits, any aid should be left to charities and private donations and not a governmental thing. Realistically, the country can't afford it - how can they justify it when there are so many unsolved problems here which they supposedly "don't have the money for" or "can't afford" to sort out?

That 140 million is still a very significant proportion of the money raised by the public. But more significantly, money donated by governments is far more quickly collected and distributed, which is imperative given the conditions that many thousands of people find themselves in.

Really, guys think of it. We are stupid for thinking that UK needs the money more than haiti. We are all humans, we should work to preserve humanity. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the western world! Nobody can tell me how a UK individual, with all their benefits, has more suffering than a Haitian.

In 2005 Cuba offered to send hundreds of doctors and tons of supplies to the US to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Don't tell me that 'they can't'.

You're attitude seems to be only white people can help blacks since they're incapable of helping each other, something which borders on racism in my view.

And Simon Darby's comment about more people dying because some of the roads weren't gritted is just completely imbecilic.

Your quite clearly are a fool, here it costs 10 times more for anything there than it does there, therefore the homeless and people in serious poverty here are in the same situation.

And it is just common sense to use your own countries money on your own countries people first.
Mate, no offense but there's pretty much no one in "serious poverty" here in Britain. There's the homeless and unemployed, half of whom are too lazy to get a job and even they in almost every circumstance find enough to live on.

Britain has a duty to humanity as an MEDC. The need of several million starving people, homeless people, genuinely on the edge of death people> the need of homeless people who can survive anyways.

Several million? Sorry? Don't you mean several billion? Do you propose that Britain spends a hundred times what she presently does on foreign aid so we can (well, it wouldn't work, but still) help these people? If not, why not? Why are Haitians so much better than Indians or Kenyans or...?

Haiti is prone to natural disasters so rather than give Haitians money why not invite some to leave Haiti and come to Europe and other places?

It would also make a nice contribution to our multi-cultural society to have a larger Haitian immigrant population in the UK.

Another person who likes to make things up.

You need a fixed address to have a job, homeless do not, therefore, you find it very hard to get one .

Unemployed I haven't said anything about?

Homeless people would not survive without charity, you are a fool and uneducated in the matter if you think otherwise.
