    OK, the topic I've just read is entropy

    Two factors can affect entropy; soace between energy levels and tenperature

    For example H_2O (l) \rightarrow H_2O (s) at\ 0^oC ∆S = -22k^{-1}mol^{-1} and ∆H = -6.01 Kj mol^{-1}

    ∆S is -ve so entropy had decreased (molecules more ordered)
    ∆H is -ve so change is exothermic. Energy is lost to surruoundings.

    ∆Ssurr = -∆H/T(k)
    ∆Stot = ∆Ssys + ∆Ssurr

    For spontaneous reaction, ∆Stot > 0
    Eqilibrium is established if ∆Stot= 0

    Lattice Enthalpy - The change in enthalpy when 1 mole of solid is formed by the coming together of seperate ions.

    Lattice enthalpy is denoted as \Delta H_{LE}
    \Delta H_{LE} is always -ve, the stronger the ionic bonding between ions, the more negative \Delta H_{LE}
    To break a lattice, equal energy to \Delta H_{LE} must be input

    Factors that affect \Delta H_{LE} are
    • Increase in ionic charge
    • Decrease in ionic radii
