Well, what were you substituting in? (A+Bt)e^mt?

Because that's still the if proof. You need to take the more generic y=u(t)e^mt, where u'' is not zero.

no, but if I substitute (A+Bt)e^mt? into the equation, and u" is 0, it only leaves two terms instead of 3. I'm so confused

Ok, in the case (A+Bt)e^mt, u(t)=A+Bt

ie u'=B and u''=0.

So now you need to take a u(t) such that u'' is not zero.

Say y=u(t)e^mt:

Then y'=u'(t)e^mt+mu(t)e^mt
and y''=u''(t)e^mt+mu'(t)e^mt+m^2u(t )e^mt+mu'(t)e^mt=u''(t)e^mt+2mu' (t)e^mt+m^2 u(t)e^mt=e^mt[u''(t)+2mu'(t)+m^2 u(t)]

And probably sub that into the DE and see where it leads.
