Problem integrating some triganomic identities, please help! (C4 old spec) watch

    • Thread Starter

I'm having problems integrating some identities, currently on exercise 6C of the edexcel book.

My problem is that I don't know what to do when I encounter sin(x)/cos^2(x).

    For example integrating 1-sin(x)/cos^2(x)

    What I do is:-

    1/cos^2(x) - sin(x)/cos^2(x)

    sec^2(x) - tan(x)sec(x)

I don't know how to get rid of the tan(x) so that I can integrate.

    Thanks for any help

You don't need to get rid of the tan(x). Do you know of any functions that differentiate to tan(x)sec(x)?

    Ah of course - sec(x) + C.

    Thanks for that!
