International postgrad student with a CONDITIONAL offer, condition being I get a 7.0 or above mark in an IELTS exam.

    - Course: taught Msc Biomedical and Mol. Sciences research

    - Current location: Malta!!

    - Expectations: Looking forward to getting back to studying - having something to focus on and deadlines and stuff (yep might sound weird but I actually really miss the student life). looking forward to the challenge of livign abroad - in LONDON TOWN SUPPERR happy about kcl location.

    - Worries: My worries are basically the same as my expectations! restarting from scratch, not knowing anyone at first, getting used to the new area, huge uni and so on. But its more excitement and nerves than worries!

Self-catered at the intercollegiate halls would be ideal for me, but that just doesn't seem to be an option!

I think the intercollegiates have a reputation for being more social than the apartments and there is always the bonus of meeting people from the other UoL colleges. However, I'm kinda worried that if most people on my floor are from Imperial, LSE or UCL then I won't have anybody to go to the Freshers events with!

I've stayed overnight in the Stamford Street Apartments before. They're really nice, but there's so much security. You have to go through like five doors and use different cards and keys before reaching your room. A little claustrophobic. Also, it means that a lot of students are separated because of this. You may meet people from the flat opposite, but otherwise it seemed that you would be pretty limited to those in your own flat. Great facilities in the kitchen and the en suite was really nice to have. Still, got months to decide yet!
If you want self catering don't go for the Intercollegiates. I ended up paying for a year of food I NEVER ate!
Socialising wise, when I started (2007) the KCL term began before any of the others so we all moved in earlier than other unis. Some other people moved in early too, but it was mainly just us for the five days or so. We all went to freshers events together.
I also made friends with a girl on facebook before I started, and she's now my best friend

    A quick question about accommodation.

Does anybody know if the fee we pay includes the Christmas and Easter vacations? I know we have to leave in the summer, but say I wanted to come back to London a few days before Christmas for shopping etc could I make use of my room? I plan on going home during Christmas and Easter anyway, but could I come back to London for a weekend with a friend from a home? I may as well make use of the fact that I'll have a room in central London or Hampstead for a year (especially if the fee does includes the Christmas and Easter break).
Depends on which Halls, but in the intercollegiates you definitely can (and you have to pay rent on the room anyway). You can ask for a rebate of £1.50 a day for your meals if you tell them in advance you are going away, but then you have to hand in your key and can't get in your room until the time's up!
I'm pretty sure most King's Halls all let you in your room too (especially as lots of internationals HAVE to stay over the holidays).
    Any more questions foire away

It's been sorted now. The accommodation services reset my log-in details so I can start ordering my choices.

Although, I still haven't received a hard copy of my offer letter or the My Accommodation/My Money booklet through the post. I think I can access the pdf format of the My Accommodation booklet online though.
oh my, now im getting worried...

hmm should i pester them now or just wait till march as they stated. pffft.

I think March is when we will all receive the letter and the My Accommodation pack. If you really want to know your login details then I suppose you could contact the undergraduate admissions of your School. That's what I did. Roger Todd (SSPP) showed me the offer letter that they have on the system and it included the details to apply for accommodation. The only reason why I contacted Roger though was because I had heard nothing since August. King's seems rubbish at general admin and admissions. I even had to ring them last year to ask them to change my conditional to unconditional the day after receiving my A-level results!

I wouldn't worry. The deadline for accommodation is the end of June so there is plenty of time. I don't even plan on sending off my preferences until April/May so it's rather pointless me having them anyway.

I received a booklet about accommodation in the post today. Looking at last year's prices I will only be able to afford accommodation in Brian Creamer House, Wolfson House and Hampstead Residence (would rather not live here). When applying for accommodation can I say i'm only prepared to go to these places? As I will not be able to afford any of the other accommodation.
    Thanks
    Matthew
No, I don't think you can say that you'd only be prepared to go to those. On the online application it makes you list all the accommodation available. If you don't list the others then it assummes that you want to go to them all just as equally e.g. if you put 1. Wolfson, 2. Brian Creamer, 3. Hampstead, then the rest will all be your 4th choice and one will be randomly selected if you don't get either of your first 3 choices. Best to order them all, mate. If money's an issue then you will not want to end up in Liberty Halls - they're about £10,000!! It's worth putting the ones you least want to go to last.

I've heard that even though Hampstead is really far away from King's it's like a campus of it's own. It has a good social side apparently with their own parties/events and you get quite a lot for your money there in terms of room size and facilities. Plus, you get to live fairly cheaply for a year in a normally very expensive area of London.

Have you not looked at the intercollegiate halls? The prices may be slightly higher than Brian Creamer and Hamstead, but you get breakfast and dinner included. Most of them are in Bloomsbury, which again is a really nice part of London.

Didn't you sent me a PM before about the course at King's? If you're looking at accommodation then am I right in thinking you'll be firming it? If so then I'll be seeing you in September.

Many people are saying that they can't afford certain halls of residence, which is absolutely reasonable. If you're unsure, the Student Finance Calculator is very useful even if it only gives an estimate of how much money you will receive from various people. It certainly helped me make up my mind.

Great Dover St isn't too far from Waterloo. If you walk at a reasonable pace you could probably get from one to the other in under 20 minutes I would have thought.

I'm glowing with delight about my KCL offer and thought that a thread for those who already know that KCL is/will be their FIRM choice if they have received/will receive an offer from there.

Basically it is a thread for those who are very likely to be starting KCL this september

    - Course
    - Current location
    - Expectations
    - Worries
    - etc...

Haha you guys all seem to have talked about the accomodation already, I'll have to read the thread through properly! But even so....

    - Geography

    - Hastings.. :indiff:

    - I don't really know! Obviously it's a brilliant university but I've read a few threads saying the Geography department isn't great but I'm sure they're just being picky!

    - Above a little bit, the fact it's not a campus uni, but obviously as its in central London that would be impossible!

I'm probably a bit late with filling this in?! haha

Congratulations! To let you know, the big rivalry was over religion as Kings was founded as a religious university whereas UCL wanted to do exactly the opposite, to teach regardless of religion. But its also just that there are two good universities with arrogant intellectuals far too close to each other to avoid conflict.

If I go to KCL il be happy to join you. If UCL i wont!

Ahhh i seee... So what exactly goes on between the two unis?? A statue was mentioned earlier in this thread..?
    Thanks for letting me know

Have you got offers from both UCL and KCL then? That is very impressive if you have! :P

How are you going to choose between them... Kings is obviously the best (im not biased at all!!! haaa) so you should definately choose to go there! Plus there is also the prospect of intense dressing up!
