I got my grades and switched onto the student programme ^_^
So I've now booked my flight, going on the November 10th Group flight to Vancouver...however I also booked 3 extra nights at the hostel where BUNAC take you when you arrive - do you happen to know if these are private rooms in the hostel or shared? It was £25 a night so I doubt they're private but it'd be good to know. Thanks.
Well done on getting the grades! You can now save your non-student visa and live in Canada for another year in the future. The hostel room in Vancouver is shared. Enjoy your trip!

yet a more specific question and don't worry if you don't know for sure but will that be sharing with other people who have booked nights along with their flights on the BUNAC programme or will it be just whoever?

You would be sharing with people from your flight, don't hesitate to get in touch if you have other questions!

    Hey guys,
I'm thinking of applying to Work Canada next summer, for maybe 4-5months.
I just wondered if not going for longer might make it hard to get work etc?
Plus its not ski season time so does anyone know whether that makes the job situation more difficult?

    Hi Abi,

If you are going to places like Whistler (ski resorts) then it's best to head out there in October-time, however if you are looking to head out in the summer then you would have few problems finding work in any of the cities. BUNAC have partner offices in Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto and their job is to help you to find seasonal work and start earning and enjoying yourself with your new friends as early as possible.

If you have any other questions about the programme, feel free to give us a call on 020-7251-0662. www.bunac.org.uk/workcanada

    Thanks!

Abi, I've just got back from doing work canada and knew people there who were only staying for 4 or 5 months and they had no trouble getting jobs. I wouldn't make a point of saying in your interviews you're not planning on sticking around but other than that you should be fine. I found a job within 3 weeks. I'd recommend Toronto - its awesome!

I just got back from work canada as well, and only went for 9 weeks! I had lots of friends who were just there for the summer and managed to find jobs, but I actually phoned up a few places before leaving and ended up in a summer camp for 5 weeks which was awesome! Some jobs are easier to apply for in person, like shop/bar work, but if you're worried about finding something maybe do some searching before you leave.

God help those staying at Global Backpacker Inn. I'm shocked that they aren't closed down for hygiene. Seriously.

Tip for you guys. If you don't want bed bugs or if you don't want to sleep on someone else's urine or blood then go to Canadiana Inn. Same price, higher standards. Even the hostels in Hong Kong are cleaner than this place.

Thats the one that BUNAC offer in their package isn't it? I've heard many stories about it but yours certainly is the worse.

Yes it is. The one that BUNAC offers.

I was expecting the worst before I went there cause I knew it was a hostel and it wasn't going to be some Travel Lodge or what have you but my gosh, they certainly managed to go below my already low expectations.

Pretty cool city. Awesome people, LOTS of different cultures. It's cool, I don't drink or go out clubbing and people are understanding of that, heck people don't even care if you drink or not. I don't even need to talk about what Britain is like with drinking, Jesus Christ.

There's more opportunity of finding a job here. I tried finding a job for 3 months in the UK, just a casual job and I didn't even get a reply let alone an inteview. In Toronto, all I have to do is go on Craigslist and send out some emails and that's it. Took me a couple of weeks to get my first job. In fact, I've got an interview on Friday with Toronto's most famous Thai restaurant and one of Canada's most famous Thai chef. Not quite sure what they see in me since all I've ever done is work in a Chinese takeaway frying chips lol.

    Did you go to Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal?

Thats sounding really positive! I've certainly heard Craigslist is the gem, and having looked through some of it the other week, it certainly looks it!

I've not gone yet, I'm hoping the student scheme reopens in December for me to get out some time next year.

I forgot to ask, in your opinion was travelling on the BUNAC flight worth the extra £, hostel aside.. I guess my only reason for potentially taking it, would be to meet some fellow BUNACers before getting to the hostel? If its not worth it, I'll just book flights independently and go straight in for the Canadiana hostel.

I went on the bunac flight to Toronto as I was going on my own and wanted to meet people before I arrived. I would recommend it if you're a bit nervous about going as you meet the other bunacers at heathrow along with the rep so you already know people before you get out there. It's also good as you then have people you know for your first few weeks there which can be a bit daunting!

Craigslist is really useful for finding jobs and accommodation. Try joining agencies and calling into places and handing out your cv - that's how I found my job as well as some of my friends out there

I did the group flight and yeah it was definitely worth it - made some great friends!

Global backpackers is really not that bad!! Okay so Canadianas a bit cleaner and has some awesome add-ons, but I loved GB. Stayed there my whole time in Toronto. Theres a decent little bar, free pancakes for breakfast, great staff, and its like 7 dollars cheaper a night... I've definitely been in worse hostels! Maybe try both and see which you prefer, theyre in the same area so its easy to swap between them

Cool! How long did you stay there? I more than likely will take up the BUNAC flight option, just because I'd prefer to get to know some people before landing in Toronto! I've been looking forward to next month (fingers crossed) for just over a year now, and then only need to save up for a few months and get over tehre!

I would say go for the group flight as well. Going by yourself is very daunting. Most of them will eventually drift off into their own plans but it's those first few hours at the airport with the other people that are as crazy as we are that makes it less overwhelming.

Make sure you have more than two backup plans.

And the greatest tip I can give you when you get out there is take it as it comes. On my flight, I think just about everyone packed the night before, did not bother finding a job, basically we were all utterly unprepared. But that's the way it should be.

it's alright, found somewhere reasonable to live very centrally but having more difficulty finding a job. Burning money like nobodies business as well.
