Is it only that CFO is an American term and FD being a British one or is there a difference?

    Thanks!

On the whole yes - however their could be a CFO for the whole company and FD's for divisions

thanks for your reply. so would all the FDs sit on the Board of Directors, being "directors" or would it only be the CFO?

It would depend on the company, how big it is etc. - though generally divisional FD's would not sit on the board of directors (i.e. a large FTSE 100 company with 10 bases around the country wouldn't have all 10 divisional FD's on the board)
