Over-Hunger

Does anyone else feel really ill if they miss a meal? If I miss breakfast (like I did yesterday) then within 2 hours I feel really sick and I go faint and dizzy- a few times even to the point of needing to go to the toilets because I'm so close to being sick.
When I tell my friends about this they just tell me to stop whinging and that I'm being stupid So i was just wondering if it was something wrong or odd about me or if other people get like this just by missing one meal?

Sometimes if I don't eat I get awful stomach pains and literally can't move. I think the sick feeling is the acid in your stomach. It thinks it's getting food because it's used to food at that time.

Okay, firstly, you're not being stupid when you say you feel ill after missing a meal...its not 'whinging', its common for many people to not feel right if they dont eat. Different people have different metabolisms - thats why some poeple can eat loads and not feel full, or eat loads and not put on weight, etc.

Three meals a day is what people should have, especially breakfast. I know i sound like a preacher when i say this, but skipping any meal is not a good idea...some people think it helps them to lose weight, others just arent hungry! As i said before, everybody's different. Although your reaction to missing one meal may seem extreme, in the scheme of things, its how you feel. If you're really worried about whether its an extreme, then see your doctor. But personally, I think your body probably reacts like it does because its telling you 'I want my breakfast!', like it should do - I feel REALLY nauseous if i dont have a meal. I'd be more worried if you reacted like that after actually eating something!

So: dont worry! Eat and be merry....

Yes - you don't eat, your glucose level drops, causes nausea, drowsiness and lethargy, and you feel like DEATH. I usually feel sick in school the period before lunch :frown:

It's a sign that you should have eaten something, and if you have, then it's a sign you should have eaten more of something rich in complex carbohydrates like low-sugar cereal, bread or potatoes.

It's what happens when you come off a fluid drip after major surgery - you don't feel like eating, but pretty soon your glucose level drops and you feel really sick from it, but you don't know you're meant to eat because you haven't eaten in days and your brain has filtered out the 'empty stomach' feeling. A vicious circle starts: you feel sick so you don't eat, and your glucose level drops even more and makes you feel more sick.

Mines a bit opposite, sometimes after a meal I feel so sick. It's not even if I've eaten loads, sometimes after a sandwich. Also if I have breakfast I feel sick for the rest of the day, especially if I eat it early :frown: I know breakfast is meant to be the most important meal of the day, but if I have breakfast I feel awful :frown:

Oh and you know when I don't have breakfast, which is usually all the time, I don't get hungry til about 5pm so don't eat until then, yet if I make myself eat breakfast I'm starving by 9am  It's just easier not to eat until 5pm

well, I don't have that problem, but you may have a metabolism that doesn't like missing a meal. If possible try to carry a marsbar (lots of sugar aka engery in that) around with you in winter and eat that if you start feeling weak or uh... something similar that won't melt in summer I guess. I'm not sure though why you would feel like this, it may be worth getting it checked with a doctor. Maybe your diet doesn't include enough carbs or something, or your body is not very good at storing/releasing the carbs ??? I think it's worth checking with a doctor just to be sure...

gemchicken, go see a doctor. I don't know about diabetes but get it checked out, because it sounds like you're having a huge insulin rush after every meal.

I kinda know what you mean - I've tried skipping meals plenty of times over the last few months as I've been trying to lose weight but all it ultimately does is make me feel worse and makes me more likely to snack, which isn't a good idea. I know it is said time after time, and the advice generally annoys me too when it's 8am and I don't feel like eating but you will feelparticularly worse if you don't eat breakfast because you will have gone from dinner the night before to lunch the following day without eating, which could be like 18 hours - too long without food. :frown: So, yeah, make sure you eat even a little something for breakfast and hopefully you won't feel sick. Like others have said though, it'll do no harm to go for a check up if you're really worried.

Just to add- I'm not skipping meals cos of a weight issue, I think I'm about right on the weight front, if I ever mI think I will always keep something with me in case it happens again though.
I know what you mean about a vicious circle- it happened the other day when I was at work- I dashed off to get lunch and I sat down with it in front of me and just thought 'no way can I eat this...' so I just had some sugary drink until I felt slightly less sick.
It's just really fustrating when people say that they don't believe it gets as bad as it does!

That doesn't happen to me. I just ate breakfast and I feel ill. Maybe I'm the opposite.

Sorry, didn't mean to scare you! Um, I don't really know about haemotology - they may have been looking at different levels. I think the only way to test properly is with a finger prick.

You're fine now though, so nothing's urgent. Just something to bring up when you're next there, if it's been like that for ages.

I also don't know anything about PCOS! Sorry!
