The question asks it all really.

I've been to gyms before. I liked it because they were so nearby, if I felt lazy, I had no choice still. But they are so expensive!

What do you suggest? There must be something better than home exercises like running up and down stairs all day.

Get a power kite . They can be expensive to buy (unless you go for a used one) but are free after that. Awesome fun and great exercise!

dancing, you must like music, or join a team so that you have the encouragement of the team, making friends will also make you want to go because you can socialise afterwards etc.

Dancing, yoga, fitness DVD, squash, badmington, tennis, whatever sport you enjoy and can go with friends

Even a trip to your local park with a few friends doing something active like football or basketball is good, and you have a laugh too! (This has reminded me of that Friends episode with the competitive American football game hehe )

rock climbing is really good fun and it keeps you fit. I pay £5 a time and you can climb all day for that £5. Once i did a 7 hour mammoth climbing session. That works out to less than a pound an hour!

There are hundreds of exercises that you can do at the comfort of your home without any cost whatsoever. Even better, volunteer somewhere that involves hard physical work which will benefit more than one person (you).

Fitness DVDs are a good idea, pretty cheap - especially off eBay. Personally I find the ministry of sound ones awesome... and they work you far far harder than the gym.

I ran up and down my stairs :P worked a treat.
Never bother with gyms because I never work hard enough, but if you go running even if you think half way through "i cba" you have to get home, ah brains
so I think running is great
