gap year - 2010/2011 application still valid?

I always wanted to go to uni at some point of my life.
I was planing to take a year off, do egnineering apprenticeship.
Last week I thought that the ealier I go to uni the better. I decided to apply and then decide if i want to go to uni or take a gap year to find myself.

I see my future in engineering or transportation design.

I decided to apply for mechanical engineering this year.
I am going to use my 4 choices on 2010 and 1 on 2011 applications.


I understand that the application for 2010 will be held for a year
.
(If i choose to do a gap year) I will apply again next year

a) if I apply again next year, would that 2011- 1st application choce be still valid?
b) ... even if next year I 2nd time apply for transportation design?

That seems to be a very overcomplicated way of going about it. Why not apply for all courses for 2010 entry and then when you have you offers you can decide whether or not to defer then.

You can only have one UCAS application at a time so you could not apply again next year if you held an offer already.
