No you have to pay after 18 unless you have a form from the NHS which says it'll pay for all your treatment in which case you'd have to find an NHS dentist!
You have to start paying as soon as you turn 19 whether you're in full time education or not. There's a form called the HC1 which you can fill in to get help with the cost (and cost of optician's, prescriptions etc. too) if you need it.

If its when I turm 19 then I'm fine for now - turned 18 on Monday and got a letter telling me I'm due a check up. Great pressie or what?! Just wanted to know if I had to pay for it!!
Thanks for the help
just had a thought- remember to bring proof that you're in full time education to your appointment, just in case they ask.

You start paying at 19. Someone told me that the HC1 only reduces costs if your dental/opticians appointment costs more than £20. So according to that - not sure if it's right or not - you don't save if you have to spend £20 or under.
Information about hte HC1 Form here. If you are on a low income and over 18 you can claim free treatment. Should include most students unless they are earning loads!

If you have more than £7000, I think, in savings you don't quality for exemption..this has affected a few of people I know who saved up over 6th form or had money left for them for when they turned 18 from grandparents and such.

Anyone know how they inforce that rule? Don't really see how they can check.

Not a clue, I just remember reading something like that on the form..I think they rely on honesty to a large extent with things like this.
Thanks everyone - suppose I should book my check up now
Hate the dentist!
