How much of a step up is it from unit 1 to unit 2?

I cant really say about the exams as i've just started looking over it in class for both Biology and Chemistry. But by looking at the topics, Chemistry looks slightly harder (I found quite a lot of Unit 1 chemistry to be around/slightly above GCSE level) and Biology just looks more boring tbh (I hate plants, ecology and all that s**t)

It may be good to get some responses from people in year 13 who have taken the AS (new spec) exams the previous year, as they would have completed the whole syllabus for AS, and can therefore comment on how they found both.

unit2 Biology is a ball ache! Had to resit it and still dont think ive improved my grade

The level of unit 2 biology is fairly similar, you need similar thinking process and such with all the how science works questions. Slightly more boring though in my opinion.
But Chemistry unit 2, I think, is a relatively big step up. There seemed to be a lot of new skills to learn, and a large content to know for the exam. You're also introduced to mechanisms in unit 2, which can be a challenge.. The best advice I have is to revise as you go along, remembering equations and conditions etc. try your hardest not to fall behind, and as soon as you don't understand a concept, work at it until you do.

I do chemistry but not biology. IMO Unit 2 is a step-up to unit 1 so it's harder. But if you work solidly for the exams you should see a result.

I definitely agree with the answers you've had!
Chem2 was a big step up from CHEM1, mainly because of the volume of material you have to cover and most of it has nothing to do with your GCSE courses, whereas CHEM1 will have seemed quite familiar to you.
Just stick in, work harder for your exams that you did for CHEM1 and you will be fine. x
