    It is a stupid idea giving a puppy as a present.
    Do you know anything about shih-tzus? about buying puppies that are health tested..? buying puppies with personalities and energy levels that match it's family...?

    That's like buying a baby and giving it to someone.

    I think Mau5 seems to have thought this through, and has thoroughly considered both his decision and the recipient's suitability for owning that gorgeous little puppy, so I say YAY PUPPY!

    If someone knew I wanted a dog, and could properly look after it, and bought me one as a present I would be so excited! As long as they bought it from an ethical breeders. And they bought me a breed I like :p:

    No reputable breeder would allow a puppy to go as a surprise "gift". Not even for a second. My guess is, sadly, that the OP purchased this dog from a puppy farm.

    All I can say is I hope the person you gave this pup to is ready for 12+ years of commitment.
