Are they really all that necessary if you have a fairly balanced diet?

Is there a danger of vitamin build up if you're getting your recommended daily dosage from your diet but then take the multi-vitamin tablets in addition?

This should answer your question.

Don't worry. Take extra vitamins.

I am told that even if you take the "ideal" amount of, say vitamin E, your body only absorbs some of it, not 100%.

I'd take vitamin E, it's an excellent antioxidant, and a balanced diet probably won't support the ideal amount of vit E.

You're probably getting enough from your diet providing its fairly balanced and it doesn't just consist of chocolate.

Eggs, milk, fruit&veg are what you need to be eating if you think you've got a vitamin deficiency.
