Not very often.

When people ask me if i suffer from it, I say I don't know or no, cause I am not exactly sure what it is.

Does it resembles feeling sad?

I'm sad generally all the time. Dunno what you mean by depressed, you mean the doctor's definition or just the general term?

Extremely rarely but sometimes I enjoy a slight bout of depression. It makes me feel like a deeper, more complex and intelligent person.

I go in stages, I have happy periods then sad periods, followed by another happy period

I'm in a down period at the moment :frown:

A quote from my psychology lectures - "Sadness is to depression what normal growth is to cancer."

So no, it's a LOT more than just being sad.

Ok, I checked the Cambridge Online Dictionary, and here's a relevant definition of depression:

depression (UNHAPPINESS)
noun
1 a feeling of unhappiness and lack of hope for the future:
I was overwhelmed by feelings of depression.

2 a mental illness in which a person is very unhappy and anxious for long periods and cannot have a normal life during these periods:
Tiredness, loss of appetite and sleeping problems are all classic symptoms of depression.
If you suffer from depression, it's best to get professional help.
See also clinical depression.

Now that I've read it, I think I very very rarely suffer from depression.

Depression is not being sad - although sadness might be a symptom of the problem. Depression is a clinical illness which can have devastating affects, -in my case it led to several years off work and the loss of a career. I have just about managed to rebuild my life after extensive help from my doctor and family, and the last part of the rehabilitation was to return to university. I was lucky and had a GP who knew what he was doing and treated the whole thing through counselling. The support of my family and friends was crucial as I know I was a real pain during my illness. But please. don't confuse a general feeling of sadness with depression, they are very different.

Many people, teenagers especially, have severe mood swings, or go through phases of insecurity, anxiety, sadness, feelings of worthlessness, which can often be confused with depression. However, so many people feel like this occassionally, of even for a period of several weeks, it is not necessarily depression, often just affects of puberty. People who often complain of depression, may be attention seekers, or pretentious. However, some people are clinically depressed, and you have to be careful to treat their illness seriously.

I don't feel 'depressed' as much anymore. I did have clinical depression, but went through years of counselling and I think I'm a lot better now. Its still something to watch out for, in times of grief or great stress, but it feels very different to the, "oh I feel down today".

I usually become depressed when I get a flare up and then it makes me even more depressed when it gets worse :frown: xoxo

Almost symmetrical results so far.

I go down over the period of a few weeks then hit a trough and then come up again over time.

Eg, hit a trough about 3 weeks ago, but now feel pretty good, got better and better every day from about 2 weeks ago

Never.

I suffer from the teenage years, not depression.
