I haven't read the thread and I'm sure it's been mentioned but if they get like that just say you'll go and get your manager for them if they're not satisfied with your service.

I get rude customers A LOT at work, often people don't want to speak to a girl, don't want to speak to someone young and the best one - when they come to you for advice and then tell you you're wrong and don't know what you're doing. Luckily, it's my dad and brothers business so I'm allowed to argue with them and/or chuck them out if they're really pissing me off.
Honestly, the best thing you can do for your confidence is to assert yourself; speak clearly, don't be overly polite or apologetic, you're not in the wrong so don't act like you are and even if you're not very sure of yourself talk as though you are.

People like the ones you served are a bunch of ass holes, it's nothing to do with you. No matter how helpful or quick you'd been she would have been rude and obnoxious so try not to let it get you down.

    haha your funny!

Like a "troll"(I've never used that word in the internet context..), you've decided on "attack the thread starter" trolling. It'll be long, hard, you will be hated my son, but you'll be remembered! Your username recognised by all, loathed, despised! But you will carry on, you will show them what you can do! RAAWR!

but seriously mate, lay off. I may not have been bullied myself but I've seen it happen to people day in day out for years, you try and stop it but generally some people are just dicks. They want to pick on someone because they get off on making people upset. the OP might be a bit skinny, long hair(that's enough even for a girl), maybe smarter then some others, seriously any excuse or any little thing. Once they have that they'll just keep bullying them. Only way to teach a bully is to bully them, harder.

I'm sure we both know people can be right idiots. If you've worked in retail you'll get it all the time, I've had it before when someone was asking me some recipe and I didn't know it. I mean what the hell? Yeah I work in a supermarket and I've pointed out where the frozen sliced chicken is, doesn't mean I know how to make every dish involving frozen sliced chicken...

Some people ask to be bullied.
When I was a kid, few times people tried to take the piss, but I gave them a good beating, because a man can only take so much.

If you can't physical beat them, get a brick, use pepper spray!
No one respect a tell tale tit.....makes it worse for you in the long run.

yeah I agree but you know some people don't have that personality. I mean I'm not violent really and I'm hardly built to be able to beat the **** out of people. If someone says something to me I'll ignore it totally or turn it around, or be sarcastic, laugh at them and call them a joker etc, doesn't matter, just let em know you don't give a **** about it. If you have your head down, look sad etc, they'll know it's getting to you. Even if it is just don't act like it, they'll not bother.

Also if it's guys bullying a girl it's a bit harder for her, especially if it's a gang of lads(pussies sorry). Also I think girls can be meaner to girls then guys are to guys. Guys in general aren't going to bother with all that emotional stuff, but girls can think of more horrible things to say to other girls that really stick.

I'm really sick of this. I work in retail in an outdoor shop. I'm 21, female and and Uni student, working 9-5 at the weekends. More often then not I am on the recieving end of sexist comments aimed at me ("Sorry love/darlin', I'd rather speak to a man" is the most common one), but I had one rather vile customer really upset me today. A woman and her daughter marched up to our desk where I was doing some paper work. She shoved a product in front my face and asked how it worked (no 'excuse me'). I took it from her, paused to think for a second, when she snatched it back and said...I quote..."I bloody well knew it. You don't know. Useless girl. But what would I expect from asking a 2 year old". She then stormed off. I was speechless...I didn't say a word to this women, yet she insulted me by calling me a 2 year old and useless?

Dealing with these type of vile people is really knocking my confidence, which I have very little of anyway (due to being bullied relentlessly for 7 years throughout school and college). Should I continue to ignore customers that personally insult me? part of me wants to turn around and insult them, but I think that might not go down too well if they said that to my manager.

(Also, your grammar is terrible, it should read: 'you're real(ly) pretty', but thanks anyway)

I'm feeling better now. It is tough having some horrible person insult you and then having to be all polite and smiley for the next customer, with that still fresh on your mind though...urgh.

hi, thnx 4 startin this thread. i have started my job in the retail sector in november, so i cant give u any sort of advice. i havnt face any extremely rude customers yet, but if customer is slightly rude i say hello n just serve them with smile. it use to calm them down. i learnt somethings 4rm this thread, so thnx to u. i dont hav much confidence either, so i guess if u wont say anything bad back to them...it separates u frm them.thats wat i think rather than lowering myself to their level.

Glad to hear it. Just remember the insult was nothing personal against you and not all people have the same attitude as her.

I do find it amazing how customers manage to treat staff sometimes. I usually struggled because I look young and I worked in a shop selling wedding outfits and the like, so you could get quite a lot of slightly older women who knew how to dress themselves quite well. Some of them spoke to me in ways they wouldn't dream of doing to an older sales assistant.
Old people are all jealous of our youth, that's why they are so bitter and boring.
