How do doctors break bones ?

A friend of mine' mother went into hospital the other day to have an operation on her toes.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, some of her toes were bent over so when she walked, she was treading on her toes, so she went into hospital to have them broken and reset.

When they did it, they had her legs in such a position that she couldnt see what they were doing - but she could hear her toes breaking.

My question is, how do doctors break your bones in a controlled manner ?
Toes I can see is probably pretty easy to do by hand, but how would they break your arm, or leg in a controlled manner - I dont think many people would have the strength to snap a fimur by hand etc..

Just wondering really so if anyone knows then fill me in....

Hit them with a hammer (toes that is).

I have no idea about larger bones. A larger hammer maybe.

Me!!! When i broke my arm there were only junior docs at the hospital (it was xmas day) and they didnt set it right as the break was more complex than they thought. I had to go in on boxing day and have a general anaesthetic to break and reset the bone.....ouch
