I'm thinking about doing a couple of cover songs and then recording and maybe distributing (but not selling) them.
Is there any legal stuff to do with copyright I need to know about? Would I have to pay royalties even if I don't make a penny from the recordings?
I'll get a couple of CAS hours though .

I'm not sure. From what I've seen if you're not making a penny from them you'll just have to make sure people are aware that it's not your own composition.

In theory yes, as it's a derivative work. But I think it's very unlikely you'd get prosecuted. Technically cover bands have the same issue, but they don't pay royalties either...

Actually I just looked up The Grey Album and EMI only really reacted because it got popular, so unless one of your songs becomes really popular you'll be fine.
