I went to University as a do-gooding, T-totaler.....within three days i was on the bandwagon  Now i drink socially like anyone else.

You can get by perfectly fine if you don't drink, but i just found i enjoyed the 'banter' more. Just makes the night out a bit more fun. And i don't mean getting drunk, just the social experience of having a drink with your mates and chatting, etc etc

That being said, depends on what kind of a drunk you and your mates are....Luckily strong drinking is prevalent in my family, i'll drink a hell of a lot of vodka, gin, whatever and be fine, apart from turning into a chatterbox  But some of my mates are rather...violent, aggresive, etc when drunk.

So yeah, if you really are that worried, just try going out with the flatmates in freshers at least once and see how it feels. You can just drink non-alcoholic stuff. If you enjoy it, then hey, sorted! If it really freaks you out, then at least you know to avoid going to clubs, etc!

If I wanted calories, I'd take Snickers over beer anyday.

There are a fair few people who don't drink to be honest.

But if your phobia extends to not enjoying the company of drunk people you may find it hard!

My money is on you becoming a right piss head in about a month after starting!

Going to start uni after summer and without a doubt my one big worry is alcohol. I have a full on phobia I'm currently working on getting rid of it but whenever I'm around drunk people I end up feeling terrible. Most people in my situation seem to all be really looking forward to freshers week and drinking lots meeting new people. Freshers week scares the hell out of me because of what people say about the drink at it. I don't drink now and i don't want to start, will i still be able to enjoy freshers week and after?
If there is anyone else who is T-total who has been through it their experience would be really appreciated.
In my group of friends at uni there are three people who don't drink, they seem to get on fine. We don't pressure them to drink, they don't preach at us not to drink, it all works. On one of them's birthday we brought loads of non-alcoholic drink to her room and had a completely teetotal party (yay, schloer!). It's about finding the right friends who won't pressure you to do anything.

No, of course not. There are loads of people at university with crap social lives.

I have a mate who doesn't drink because his Dad died from liver failure but he still goes out and seems to have a good time.

I personally couldn't do it, i go out 2/3 times a week and get fairly drunk each time.

Being part of the uni football team drinking a lot and playing drinking games is standard. If you don't drink you will miss out on a whole lot of fun and banter.

I'm gonna be 21 when I start in September, done the whole going out and getting ******** all the time since I was 16 (well, 14 I guess) and don't really enjoy getting overly drunk anymore.

I'm gonna be the one taking advantage of all the wasted little 18 year olds. :3

I don't drink that much because of personal reasons (don't go there..) and I still had a really good freshers week last year.
    So don't worry :-)
