Play a bit of Ska! Less than Jake or Reel Big Fish would keep the mood upbeat and get everyone dancing!

Yeah, play some Less Than Jake... or Patent Pending's "Cheer Up Emo Kid", can't go wrong with *that* song...
Then play some: Hot Hot Heat. Play the songs: "Bandages", "Goodnight, Goodnight", "Oh Goddamnit," and maybe "Le Le Low." No one can resist those songs, especially the first 3...
Play Cartel's "Hey, Don't Stop" and also see if you can find the "Honestly" demo...
The Get Up Kid's no longer exist... but you should most definitely play "Ten Minutes", it has a lot of energy.
Babyshambles suggestions are pretty good, especially the Killers/the strokes. Also play something by The Shins.

That's what I'd play, at any rate. Hope it helps. =)
Idioteque by radiohead is effectively a dance song (vocals aside).
For some reason I always dance to "just" by radiohead as well!
"National anthem" isnt bad either, with that pounding bass...
can't stand me now- the libertines

that's not so much dancing as just jumping around. it's fun though

Thanks everyone...I had quite a few of those already but I hadn't thought of Reel Big Fish or Less Than Jake which both seem appropriate
Dont stop me now -Queen
New Found Glory - Back That Azz Up

It's a cover, and just very fun to jump around to :p:

hallucination
My friend's 21st is coming up and I've been put in charge of music. Most of the guests are into rock/alternative/indie kinda music, but obviously I want the mood to be upbeat and want to choose songs that will make people get up and dance...

Has anyone got any good recommendations apart from the obvious cheese (e.g. sweet child of mine)....?

Thanks
Have you heard of the Australian band Regurgitator? Lol don't be put off by the name, they're an alternative band with an amusing disposition about them - ie. they can be quite funny :p:

Good for background music at parties, they always seem to do that at the concerts I go to

Although ironically I wanted to see them the other week, but I could't b/c I was underage

Lithium would be better

Babyshambles

Disco infiltrator of the new album is great too

I DJ to the indie crowd sometimes, its tricky. Personally, ive got an aversion to most of the obvious things: Queen, band beggining with 'The..' but hey :P If youve got the time, try and track down remixes by 'Phones': hes Paul Epworth who produced Bloc Party and various other popular indie bands. In particular his disco edit of bloc partys Banquet is fantastic. Generally youll find people will dance to certain tunes whatever their tastes if theyve had a few drinks  checkout this : http://www.majorpita.com/ and download the Scummer Mix in particular

...it has rocked every party ive put it on at
play a bit of the prodigy, that will get their butts moving
