I am at uni in Newcastle where for some reason people start looking for private accommodation from the beginning of November.

As it stands (almost February) I am currently homeless for next year, and the number of properties are running out fast. Now I know what people will say, there are always properties available, but from experience this year if you leave it late you end up paying more for sub standard accommodation, ie. there is a reason properties that are left are there.

Currently the main reason holding us back from looking is a housemate who can't decide whether to take a year abroad or not. Obviously this is a big decision, but he has had since the beginning of the year (from the beginning of his degree even!) to think about it. And he just won't make a decision.

If I was in his situation, I wouldn't put people through this limbo. It is causing me a lot of stress as all my other friends are sorted and we haven't even started looking.

How can we tell him (nicely) that if he hasn't decided by x date that we will just start looking without him? I think he is just very unaware of how housing works and that we can't leave it much longer.

Just tell him what you've put here. That you're worried that you're not going to find a house at a decent price and that it's not fair for him to expect you guys to wait around for his decision. If he's a real friend he'll understand and sort himself out!

The problem is that my other housemates agree with me but are too scared to confront him. I just end up coming off like a ***** because I'm the only one willing to say anything, and they won't properly back me up. Bah.
