I doubt that any are actually any more snobby than others but Trinity College is considered to be very rah rah rah and as for down-to-earth, I heard that Kings, Queens and all small colleges are

I'm going (grades permitting) to Trinity - but I'm not a rah nor am I snobby.

How dare you challenge centuries old stereotypes!

I'm also going to Trinity and I am far from snobby. I was speaking to one of my friends who graduated from Christ Church,Oxford last year and he told me that the vast majority of people just want to get on with things aren't snobby at all. However, there is a small minority of people who do fit the stereotype and think they are better than everyone because they went to a posh school and their Daddy is loaded. You also get a small minority of people who went to state schools who just think they are cooler than everyone else for no real reason.

If you read the old Trinity College thread you'll find that the overwhelming majority of us are hardworking, friendly and interesting people.

Clare isn't very snobby. Well it wasn't, not until I got there, then they had to relay all the floors with a higher grade of marble, as the original marble just wasn't good enough me. Of course they got rid of all the poor people. (I didn't like their odour, or their northern accents)

I'm going to Fitzwilliam, and I hear that's one of the friendliest and most easy-going colleges. That's what the people there told me, which can be considered a subjective piece of information, BUT I did get a similar reply from a student from another college who was working as a waitress at the cafe I went to before my interviews. She told me Fitz has a very down-to-earth reputation. That sounded like a very objective and nice answer...

I hate to ruin your stereotypes but in fact, when you consider people are only there for three years, it's hard to get properly snobby in that time. In general you are looking at a fair crossection of society- everybody has a proud glow in their eyes knowing they're at Cambridge but I've never met anybody snobby about their colleges. I mean, snobby people exist but you get them anywhere. I've never met a snobby about Cambridge person. They'd quickly be disliked.

I went to Sidney for an open day and everyone there seemed so down to earth and friendly. It was quite relaxed too- you could walk on the grass! :p:

i don't mean to stir the pot, but a friend of mine said he saw a gaggle of snobs near sainsbury’s, all wearing trinity scarves and passing around inscribed tankards and trinity pennants; they were laughing, enumerating inferior colleges, and scoffing about media studies.

only MOST of the grass....chapel and Hall court, as well as the masters garden, are strictly no-no, unless you are a fellow :p: apparantly snow angels and snowmen often appear on said grasses in the middle of the night...

people in cambridge don't tend to be snobby for the simple reason that they are surrounded by very intelligent people - if you want to be snobby then you better be clever or you'll be ripped to shreds.

I didn't like trinity... the buildings are nice but the court was too shabby and too big

the idea of snobbyness amuses me. So-called 'snobs' theoretically look down on the rest of society, vowing never ever to be like them. Whereas the 'common muck' take the piss out of the 'snobs' and are equally as hostile.

they might have been drunk and thought it'd be funny to scare prospective applicants/tourists. like the 'tourist' and porters thing at Kings

Same. I think people who give in to stereotypes like these are not being sensible. Every college will surely have a mixed bunch of people of different kinds, some more snobby than others.

come on! don't think i'm shooting you down, but is irony even possible on TSR?

Reply 18

You'll be amazed at how obvious you have to make irony/sarcasm/taking the piss before people suss it. Someone bemoaned my obsession with Oxbridge rivarly for writing posts like "Tabsville sux, Oxford roolz"...

EDIT: I thought it was a very funny and well done post, though

What amuses me is that quite a lot of rahs I've met are reasonably apologetic about it. There are some snobs, but they tend to congregate and then disappear up their own arses together leaving most of Cambridge to 'normal' people. Of course the rest of the country thinks that we're all snobs: it's all relative.
