Standard deviation is a measure of the spread of a set of data about the mean result (which may simply be referred to as the 'average' in some cases, though this is a less precise term). The higher the standard deviation, the more spread the data.

As a very simple example, the two sets of values {1,5,9} and {4,5,6} both have the same mean (5), but the first will have a greater standard deviation as the results are more spread from the mean.
